Dr Suresh Giragani Interventional Radiologist

A proud milestone for the Indian stroke intervention community. 🇮🇳🧠
This #WorldStrokeDay, we take a monumental step forward from relying on Western data to answering critical questions with our own Indian clinical evidence. I am deeply honored and proud to have been part of India’s first two multicenter mechanical thrombectomy studies: the PRAAN Registry and the GRASSROOT Trial.
For our patients, families, and referring doctors across the country, here is what this evidence demonstrates:
* PRAAN Registry (14 centres, 190 patients): India’s first prospective multicentre thrombectomy registry showed successful blood flow restoration in nearly 9 out of 10 patients, with two-thirds returning to independent lives—proving both clinical success and cost-effectiveness within our healthcare framework.
* GRASSROOT Trial (8 centres): Evaluating an affordable, value-priced stent retriever device in real-world Indian conditions—often in shared angiography suites—the trial achieved a 94% recanalization rate, matching the best landmark trials worldwide.
A heartfelt congratulations to our incredible co-investigators, multidisciplinary site teams, and pioneers across the country who made both studies possible.
Stroke does not wait, and neither should our health systems. Let’s work together to turn life-saving thrombectomy from an elite privilege into a universal standard of care.
