Chronicles of a Zoe
Sometimes the programs we create are inspired by the things we wish WE had growing up.
For me, that’s a big part of Lakayro. ❤️
I grew up dancing, performing and being involved in my community.
And now I have the opportunity to create a space for young people where they can dance, learn about their culture, build confidence and discover what they’re capable of.
I want a young Haitian kid to walk into Lakayro and realize:
“There are people here who understand me.”
I want them to learn a dance and then learn the STORY behind it.
I want them to perform and feel proud.
I want them to make friends.
I want them to challenge themselves.
And I want them to know that their culture isn’t something they have to leave behind in order to grow.
They can carry it WITH them. 🇭🇹❤️
That’s the legacy I’m trying to build with Lakayro.

What if one of the greatest things we can give the next generation is a stronger connection to where they come from? 🇭🇹❤️
That thought is at the heart of why I founded Lakayro.
I want our young dancers to know that Haitian & Afro-Diasporic dance isn’t just something they can perform.
It is history.
It is storytelling.
It is community.
It is identity.
And it deserves to be taught, practiced, celebrated and passed down.
Through Lakayro Youth Dance Company, I’m creating a space where young people can develop as dancers while learning about the culture behind the movement.
Because eventually, these kids become the ones carrying the culture forward.
And I want them to have something meaningful to carry. 🇭🇹

🇭🇹 A PIECE OF HAITIAN HISTORY YOU SHOULD KNOW:
Haiti’s revolution wasn’t just about one famous leader.
It involved enslaved people, free people of color, women, soldiers, Indigenous and African cultural influences, and competing political interests.
The Haitian Revolution was a massive, complicated historical event — and reducing it to “Toussaint started a revolution and Dessalines finished it” leaves out A LOT.
What part of Haitian history do you wish schools actually taught?
Drop it below. 👇🏽

Chronicles of a Zoe
🇭🇹 One of the things I love most about Haitian culture is that it has NEVER been quiet.
Our music is loud.
Our drums are loud.
Our celebrations are loud.
Our history is powerful.
And our dance tells stories that existed long before most of us were even born.
But I don’t want the next generation to only experience Haitian culture through food, flags and festivals.
I want them to MOVE IT.
I want a Haitian child to learn Yanvalou and understand that they’re learning something connected to history.
I want them to hear Rabòday and know that Haitian creativity doesn’t need permission.
I want them to learn Konpa and understand that they’re participating in a culture that belongs to THEM.
And I want them to walk into a dance studio and see other Haitian and Afro-Diasporic kids who look like them, sound like them and understand them.
That’s why Lakayro Youth Dance Company matters to me.
This isn’t just about putting kids on a stage.
It’s about giving them culture.
Craft.
Confidence.
And we officially started our Youth Dance Company September 15. 🥹🇭🇹

We’re teaching them that their culture is worth carrying forward. 🇭🇹❤️

🧿 LET’S TALK VODOU.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Haitian Vodou is that it is simply “devil worship.”
But Vodou is a complex Haitian spiritual tradition involving relationships with Bondye, the lwa, ancestors, community, ritual, music and ceremony.
What is ONE thing you were taught about Vodou growing up that you later realized wasn’t actually true?
Let’s have an honest conversation. 🇭🇹👇🏽
