A drive along European route E75 from Utsjoki to Inari takes you through the heart of Finnish Lapland and Sámi culture. This route largely follows the beautiful river valley and the open fells, offering majestic nature, unique cultural heritage, and great opportunities for outdoor activities.

The route begins in Utsjoki, where you can visit the historic 19th-century church cabins and the idyllic stone church by Lake Mantojärvi. Heading south, you will pass the deep Lake Kenesjärvi with its dramatic, steep cliff faces, before the road skirts the vast Kevo Nature Reserve. Crossing the weather-beaten Petsikko fell, you drive above the tree line and experience the open, Arctic tundra landscape at its best.

Once you arrive in Inari, you should visit the award-winning Sámi museum Siida and the Sajos cultural centre, which also houses the Finnish Sámi Parliament. You can round off your trip with a boat tour on the sacred Lake Inari out to the ancient sacrificial island of Ukonsaari. Remember to drive carefully along the way, as reindeer are very commonly found on and beside the road.

Starting your journey in Switzerland and driving down towards Italy via the San Bernardino Pass offers a unique experience of how Central Europe gradually transitions into the charm of the Mediterranean. A scenic and rewarding route begins in the historic city of Chur in Graubünden—Switzerland’s oldest city.

From there, you drive south through the dramatic Viamala Gorge, where the Rhine has carved deep into the rock over millennia, before beginning the ascent to the mountain pass via the charming village of Splügen.

After crossing the summit of San Bernardino at 2,065 meters and leaving Lago Moesola behind, a spectacular descent into the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino begins. The road winds down the steep Mesolcina Valley; along the way, you should stop at the imposing medieval Castello di Mesocco, which towers over a rocky outcrop on the valley floor and historically guarded this vital trade route.

The landscape truly opens up when you reach Bellinzona, a city world-renowned for its three UNESCO-listed medieval castles: Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro. Here, you immediately notice an unmistakable Italian atmosphere—evident in the architecture, cafés, and palm trees—even though you are technically still in Switzerland.

From Bellinzona, you can easily cross the border into Italy by continuing south along the shores of beautiful Lake Maggiore (Lago Maggiore) or across the Magadino Plain towards the Swiss-Italian border town of Chiasso. From there, the route leads directly to Lake Como (Lago di Como) or towards the fashion capital of Milan. This transition from the cool, barren Swiss Alpine peaks to the sun-warmed Italian lakes—a drive of just a few hours—makes the route one of the most beautiful and contrast-filled road trips in Europe.

The drive from Ebensee to Weißenbach am Attersee is a short but incredibly scenic journey through the Austrian alpine landscape. On this twenty-minute trip, you will drive through the dramatic Weißenbachtal valley, surrounded by the steep rock faces of the Höllengebirge mountain range.

Right after starting in Ebensee, you should take a short detour to the crystal-clear Langbathseen lakes, which are perfect for a peaceful walk. Further along the main road, you follow a wild river, where you can pull over at the turquoise Gimbach Cascades to watch the water rush through deep rock pools. The trip ends beautifully as the valley opens up to the striking, turquoise waters of Lake Attersee. Here in Weißenbach, you can stretch your legs with an easy thirty-minute walk to the fifty-meter-high Nixenfall waterfall.

The drive over Flatruetvägen is Sweden's highest public road at 975 meters above sea level, and the 38-kilometer-long gravel road takes you directly up onto a treeless, tundra-like high mountain plateau. Here, you drive through an active reindeer husbandry area with free-roaming reindeer, while enjoying fantastic panoramic views of Helagsfjället.

Along the way, the road passes the Sami village of Mittådalen (Madi), one of the most central hubs for Sami culture and reindeer herding in Härjedalen, where you can visit local artisans or purchase traditional Sami food like reindeer meat during the summer months.

Since the road sits completely exposed on the weather-beaten mountainside, it is highly vulnerable to shifting conditions and is regularly closed with gates during snowstorms or high winds. The road is always closed overnight during the winter season (December to April), and large electronic signs in Funäsdalen and Ljungdalen alert drivers whether the pass is open or closed. In the summer, the gravel road is easily drivable for standard cars, but the surface requires a low speed and plenty of distance to the vehicle ahead to avoid rock chips and punctures on the sharpest gravel sections.

The drive over the Cormet de Roselend in the French Alps is a spectacular mountain pass in the Savoie region, but it is not an all-year road. Due to heavy snowfall in the high mountains, the pass is normally closed for winter from the beginning of November until the end of May. The 40-kilometer-long route connects Beaufort and Bourg-Saint-Maurice, with the road climbing to a summit of 1,968 meters above sea level at an average gradient of around 6 percent via tight, technical hairpin turns.

The climb holds a legendary status in professional cycling, having been featured numerous times as a challenging first-category mountain pass in the Tour de France since its debut in 1979.

The journey starts in Beaufort and initially climbs through dense pine forests before the landscape opens up at the legendary Barrage de Roselend. This azure-blue, artificial lake is surrounded by green mountainsides, and the famous, photogenic chapel Sainte-Marie-Madeleine is located right by the water's edge as a natural stopping point. Past the lake, the landscape changes character, becoming barren and alpine with vast pastures and views of the Mont Blanc massif in the distance.

The final leg offers a steep descent toward Bourg-Saint-Maurice, where the road winds down through airy, demanding switchbacks within the narrow Vallée des Chapieux. The route eventually emerges from the wild gorges and flattens out in the Tarentaise Valley, marking the end of this high-contrast mountain route.

Our drive from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Tegernsee was a magnificent journey along the *Deutsche Alpenstraße*—Germany’s oldest and most famous scenic route. With the snow-capped Zugspitze massif behind us, we followed this legendary road past the turquoise waters of Lake Walchensee, before the spectacular hairpin bends of the Kesselberg Pass led us down toward Lake Kochelsee.

As part of this historic Alpine route, the road winds its way past idyllic farmsteads and bright green spring forests, before crossing the crisp, meltwater-fed Isar River near the colorful town of Bad Tölz. This beautiful stretch of the Alpine road concludes perfectly upon arrival at Tegernsee, where we can enjoy the spring sunshine at one of the lively outdoor terraces lining the sparkling lake.

Driving this particular stretch allowed us to experience the very essence of the Bavarian Alpine idyll, where engineering prowess meets unspoiled nature.

Our drive over Klausen Pass begins in the historic village of Bürglen in the canton of Uri, right at the entrance to the Schächental valley, from where the road immediately starts climbing upwards through the valley. On this side, the route is quickly characterized by precipitous slopes, and the roadway clings directly to the rock face, passing beneath overhanging cliffs and through dark tunnels. With a gradient that occasionally reaches up to 9–10 percent, a spectacular series of sharp hairpin turns leads high up into the mountains, while the road offers an open and breathtaking panoramic window over the deep valley and the sunny alpine villages below.

Once at the mountain pass summit itself, 1,948 meters above sea level, the terrain levels out before the gradual descent toward the east begins. The road first leads down to the wide high-alpine valley of Urnerboden, a gigantic alpine meadow that forms a sharp contrast to the steep mountainsides. Here, the road flattens out for a couple of kilometers, providing a welcome break from the demanding driving. The roadway crosses a green cultural landscape where scattered, traditional wooden houses and large herds of grazing cattle are set against a massive backdrop of the snow-capped Clariden Alps.

From Urnerboden, the road changes character and tackles the final, deep descent toward the canton of Glarus. With a steady and demanding gradient of around 6 to 8 percent, the route winds its way down through dense forests and deep mountain gorges via another series of tight hairpin bends. The landscape here is characterized by vertical rock walls and wild river chasms where meltwater torrents down the mountainside, before the dramatic and eventful drive finally concludes in the charming village of Linthal at the bottom of the valley.

This summer, Kristin & Svein’s Scenic Journeys traveled through the spectacular Manghen Pass (Passo Manghen) in Italy, a hidden gem in the Dolomites that stands at an elevation of 2,047 meters above sea level. Located in the Trentino region of Northern Italy, this mountain pass connects the Val di Fiemme and Valsugana valleys.

The drive up the narrow, steep mountain road offers a dramatic transition from dense spruce forests to a rugged, alpine landscape. With gradients reaching up to 16%, the route features challenging hairpin turns and is so narrow that large vehicles are strictly prohibited.This legendary stretch is famous from the Giro d'Italia cycling race, where icons like Eddy Merckx and Marco Pantani once battled the grueling climbs.

Today, the road is shared with determined cyclists and grazing cattle. With every meter of elevation gained, magnificent new views of the Lagorai massif open up.At the summit sits the idyllic mountain lodge, Baita Passo Manghen, the perfect spot to breathe in the crisp mountain air and take in the raw nature.

The majestic silence of the pass—which remains closed due to snow for large parts of the year—gave us a profound sense of freedom and true adventure on wheels.

• The Southernmost Point: We drove as far south as possible to the unique Isla de Tarifa in Spain, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, overlooking the African continent.
• The Northernmost Point: We clocked in the miles through endless landscapes all the way up to the iconic, weather-beaten North Cape Plateau (Nordkapp) in Norway.
• The Highest Point: We pushed our engine to the limit up to the magical Cime de la Bonette in the French Alps – Europe's highest paved through-road at a staggering 2,802 meters above sea level!
