Five ancient African empires — Kush, Aksum, the Empire of Ghana (Wagadou), Mali, and Ile-Ife — didn't just practice religion alongside politics. In each one, belief was the machinery that decided who ruled, who was removed, and what an entire people believed they were capable of becoming.
This video traces that thread from a king of Kush who broke centuries of precedent by refusing an order from his own priesthood, through Aksum's conversion recorded on its own coinage, the serpent legend behind the gold trade of ancient Ghana, Mansa Musa's pilgrimage that reshaped how the world saw Africa, and Ile-Ife's Yoruba pantheon — including a god of thunder still worshipped today under names you've likely heard without knowing their origin.
Some of what's covered here — a chapel in Ethiopia still guarded by a single monk, a Nigerian city where a Yoruba king's authority traces back over a thousand years, oral traditions passed down by griots long before they were ever written — isn't hidden. It's just rarely told with the weight it deserves.
