glammer

I was asked what apps I use for mashups.

DAW: Reaper. It's not strictly free but the only restriction after the trial period is a 5-second delay on startup. Comes with lots of plugins and I also use Ozone Imager 2, Woodstock Audio's Waveform Compressor and Tokyo Dawn Labs TDR Nova EQ. They're all free.

Audacity (free): I just use it to convert MP4 to wav for uploading to MVsep to get stems.

MVsep (free): Website for separating stems. If you register, the wait times are quicker. Algorithms I currently use:
BS Roformer SW for bass, drums, guitar, piano and other.
Demucs4 HT for an alternative other, because sometimes it gets a better one than Roformer.
BS Roformer for vocals and instrumental. I tend to use individual stems rather than an instrumental but sometimes it's useful.
DrumSep - 4 stems - use the Roformer drum stem to get kick, snare, cymbals/hats and toms.
I've used some of the vocal separations like multivocal and male/female but they're not as reliable.

I sometimes also get stems from Songstems net.

Steinberg SpectraLayers Elements. It's not free but I use it a lot for little separations. Elements is the cheaper basic version. It shows you the frequency map and you can select with marquee or drawing tools which frequencies or parts you want to use or delete. It's great for getting little synth noises, which might only use a small amount of frequency. It also has a vocal/instrumental separation but mvsep is better. The noise reduction is also useful sometimes to clean up stems.

Lyons' Den Delay Time Calculator. Type in the tempo and get attack and release times for compressors etc. Start there and adjust to taste.

VSDC: Free video editor but I pay to get the HW acceleration and a few extra features.
