From Bologna Sandwiches to Broken Barriers: A Daughter’s Tale of Food, Prejudice & Progress

In a world of instant everything—pre-sliced sandwich bread, jars of butter pickles lining every grocery aisle, and recipes that once required a day’s labor now ready in minutes—something deeper has shifted too.

Remember the fried bologna sandwich of a simpler time? Thick slices of bologna, sizzling in a skillet until the edges curled and crisped, nestled between soft white bread with a smear of mustard or mayo, and that bright, tangy crunch of sweet relish… the only pickle relish most of us could find growing up. Today the same sandwich can be elevated (or just made easier) with butter pickles, gourmet bread, or whatever your local store stocks at 2 a.m. Convenience has rewritten the generational recipe book. What once felt like a hard-won comfort food is now almost effortless—yet the memory of those early versions still carries the weight of the kitchens and the people who made them.

This is the story my father carried into those kitchens.

He was a Vietnam veteran, a proud member of the Klan in the years after he came home. He wore the ideology the way some men wear scars—openly, unapologetically, for a long time. Everyone in the neighborhood knew. And still, something in him began to crack.

He started noticing the people he had been taught to keep at a distance. The Black neighbors who returned his wary nods with quiet dignity. The elderly woman whose lawn grew wild after his wife passed—my father mowed it without being asked, week after week, no matter the color of the hands that later waved thanks. He began sharing the hot-peppered canned pickles and eggs he put up every summer, sliding jars across fences and porches. Conversations happened. Small ones at first. Then longer ones. He never stopped being who he had been, but he started seeing what he had refused to see: that the people he tried not to judge by cover and color were, in the end, just people. And those same neighbors, fully aware of the robes and the rhetoric, found the same acceptance for him.

The energy moves bottom-up: an earthbound creature extending awareness toward higher forces. It's associated with Heimdall-style watchfulness, sharp boundaries, and primal guardian instinct.

Oak, by contrast, is often framed as a conduit running top-down—lightning-struck oaks channeling Thor/Donar's power, leaves "falling from on high" as blessings descending into the physical world. The oak's deep roots and broad canopy make it a literal bridge between realms, but its symbolic motion is receptive rather than reaching.

Synthesized, these two symbols form a complete loop: Algiz sends awareness/intention upward, oak receives and grounds divine energy downward. Together they represent a closed circuit of spiritual exchange—vigilance paired with rootedness, alertness paired with endurance.

This pairing also maps onto practical protection use: Algiz suits situational, active defense (travel, confrontation, heightened awareness), while oak suits sustained, ambient protection (home, lineage, long-term resilience). One is a shield you raise; the other is a foundation you stand on.

Worth noting: much of this synthesis—especially the "fallen from high heavens" framing and the specific Algiz/oak pairing—reflects modern eclectic pagan reinterpretation rather than a single attested historical tradition. Elder Futhark runes and Celtic/Germanic oak veneration are real and well-documented separately, but their combination here, and especially the "complementary loop" framing, is best understood as a personal or contemporary synthesis rather than inherited lore.
