Find Umma and me in Made With Lau's latest vlog!

For those who may not know, Ahnest Kitchen exists in large part because of Made With Lau. Watching Randy and his dad inspired me to start filming Umma's recipes. Not just in a way that was fun, but in a way that was honorable.

I owe a lot to Randy. Seeing what they created helped me imagine what was possible for Umma and me.

We won a James Beard Award for our cookbook UMMA!!! Things have been so surreal these past 24 hours, and we are beyond grateful for this recognition.

When we created this book, it was very important to me that it be told from my mother’s perspective — a perspective that reveals the richness in the ordinary.

There are countless mothers, grandmothers, and home cooks like my Umma. Yet few ever imagine their foods and stories belong in a book.

Instead, they spend their lives creating opportunities for their children. And because life‘s demands often leave little room for words, food becomes their language of love.

To my Umma: thank you for teaching me that language. Thank you for saying yes when I boldly proposed we write a cookbook together. You knew from the start how much work it would be, and yet you said yes anyway.

You brought a lifetime of cooking knowledge, recipes, and wisdom gathered through experience. I brought my love of storytelling, writing, and sharing food with others. Together, we created something neither of us could have made alone.

And at 66 years old, you reminded us that there is no age limit on growth, creativity, or beginning something new. You reminded us that some of the most extraordinary stories and food are found in the most ordinary lives.

I am forever grateful to have you as my Umma.

We’re coming to the Midwest! On Nov 5, Umma and I are hosting a cozy Korean dinner and storytelling night at Seven Acre Dairy in Paoli, WI.
