John Dee was the cleverest man in Elizabethan England, the queen's own philosopher. And he spent his last decades writing down what he believed angels dictated to him through a crystal.
Out of it came a wax seal and a whole language, later called Enochian, given to him backwards, letter by letter, so its power could not go off in the delivery. The catch: the seal's design was already sitting in a book on his own shelf.
You do not have to believe a word of it. His crystal, his black mirror and the wax disc are in a glass case in the British Museum, where you can go and look.

Say the Key of Solomon and people picture the 72 demons. That is the Lesser Key. A lesser key implies a greater one, and there is.
The greater Key is not a book of demons. It is a book of chores: make the knife, make the parchment, draw the seal, in the right hour, then wait. And it is not Solomon's. It is early modern, anonymous, and it survives in more than 100 copies, no two the same, not one of them the first.
The only thing that never changed, through 100 copies and 400 years of scribes, is the king's name on the front.

A Benedictine abbot wrote a book that told you how to send messages through angels, to anyone, anywhere. People begged him to burn it. The Church put it on the Index.
Then it was printed with a key. Strip the spirit-names, read the rest by the rule, and a plain little message falls out of the spell. It was never angel magic. It was a code.
The word for hiding a message inside an innocent one is steganography. He coined it. The title said so the whole time.

Almost nobody is shown the other list of 72, the one they were built to be the shadow of.
It is not a list of demons. It is a list of the names of God, and you can count it out of 3 verses of Exodus with nothing but a Hebrew Bible and the patience to count to 72.
