"You're angry. That makes sense." Six words that can change a child's inner world. Big feelings overwhelm a child because they have no shape, no words, no edges โ just a storm inside. When you name the feeling, you give it a container. In this step: keep it simple, validate before you problem-solve, and remember โ a child expressing anger isn't giving you a hard time. They're having a hard time.
Fifteen minutes of play, with your child in charge, can do what a hundred lectures can't. Play is a child's first language โ and when you enter their world on their terms, you tell them: you matter, your choices matter, and I delight in you. In this step: let them choose the game (even the same one for the tenth time), phone away, and let the story go where they take it. Your job isn't to teach or correct. It's to enjoy them.
You will lose your temper. What happens next matters more than the mistake. What damages attachment isn't the rupture itself โ it's the rupture that's never repaired. In this step: cool down first, name it simply ("Earlier I yelled, and that must have felt scary"), own your part without excuses, then reconnect. It isn't perfect parenting that builds security. It's repair.
"Co-Regulation โ Lending Your Calm to Your Child"
When your child is drowning in big feelings, they don't need you to be perfect โ they need your calm. Young children can't calm themselves down yet; they borrow regulation from the nearest calm nervous system. Yours. In this step: getting low to their eye level, breathing visibly so they can breathe with you, and the honest part โ you can't lend calm you don't have, so your regulation matters too.
"ADHD & Perimenopause: Distracted, Sweating & Awake at 3 A.M."
It's 3 a.m. The house is asleep. You are researching a project nobody assigned you, with a fan pointed at your face. In the final episode of this series: what happens when perimenopause meets an ADHD brain โ why the strategies that held for decades quietly stop holding, and why needing new systems is adaptation, not decline. Nothing about you got worse. The scaffolding did.
Not everyone will understand you โ and peace is possible anyway. "Letting Go of the Need to Be Understood by Everyone," the last of Sunday's four new Shorts: youtube.com/shorts/qaQJIbmprsw ยท Reel: facebook.com/reel/2071019336859770/ โ On Friday, the ADHD at Home finale arrives. ๐
