Did 1988 end in 2026?

Dear Friends: When I interviewed Bishop Athanasius Schneider at the Catholic Identity Conference on October 3, 2026, he admitted to his eagerness to celebrate Mass at St. Mary Major in Rome for the close of the Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage (SP Pilgrimage): “If we are not allowed in the ‘house of the father’ then we will go to the ‘house of the mother,’ to pray to our mother for peace.”

So, the controversy that exploded around the SP Pilgrimage last weekend in Rome had nothing to do with the beautiful TLM that Bishop Schneider celebrated in a packed-out Basilica of Saint Mary Major. Rather, the controversy erupted over a bizarre Vatican decision to bar the SP Pilgrimage from even entering St. Peter’s Basilica. And, given that the SP Pilgrimage was comprised of many young families and plenty of babies in their mothers' arms -- well, the optics were terrible!

For the past fifteen years, the SP Pilgrimage has always taken place on the last weekend in October. It was a long-established event which just last year, had not only been allowed inside St. Peter’s, but also closed with a magnificent Latin Mass celebrated by Raymond Cardinal Burke for some five thousand pilgrims.

So why was permission to enter St. Peter’s denied this year? The Vatican offered no explanation, but many of us wondered if last year's Cardinal Burke Mass had been just a bit too successful for the Vatican to handle. What is certain is that there was no conflict with another event in St. Peter's, as some eager neo-Catholic bloggers subsequently tried to claim. (This was verified by Vatican journalist, Diane Montagna, who subsequently posted copies of the exchange of letters between the SP Pilgrimage organizers and the Vatican.)

I again interviewed Bishop Schneider just a few hours after he'd offered Mass in St. Mary Major to close the SP Pilgrimage. His Excellency described the Vatican’s decision to withhold permission to enter St. Peter’s as a “scandal” and an “act of pastoral cruelty” which will “surely go down in history as a sign of the Vatican’s disdain for Tradition.” His Excellency traced the controversy back to Traditionis Custodes through which the Vatican had made it clear that “the Traditional Latin Mass must die and be extinguished.” (See my interview here: https://youtu.be/3XQXLSY6ljs?si=b-PA3... )

Two days before that interview in Rome, we had dropped another video all about the growing Vatican hatred of all things Traditional Catholic, as indicated by a new interview of Arthur Cardinal Roche, Prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. This report from Rome now provides some additional context for last weekend’s controversy, which cannot be understood apart from Traditionis Custodes itself: https://youtu.be/YTLFzzvh47M?si=yWWtB...

What happened last weekend could be described as the closing argument in the case of Summorum Pontificum versus Traditionis Custodes. History may well conclude that the SP Pilgrimage 2026 is where 1988 ended, i.e., with the Vatican abandoning any further attempts to lure the SSPX into full communion with the Spirit of Vatican II. After the episcopal consecrations on July 1, 2026, there was evidently no reason for the Vatican to pretend to care about any of us anymore.

We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, all traditional Catholics now know how it feels to be thrown out of the big church merely for holding fast to Tradition and the Faith of our fathers. Last weekend, the Vatican came fully out of the closet. May God help us all.

Europe in Flames: Holy Father, Stop the Madness NOW!

Dear Friends:

Europe is burning. The formerly Catholic countries of once mighty Christendom are under siege. The open border policies of maniacal globalists have left France and Italy so overrun with immigrants that even schools have become dysfunctional. They are filled with students who do not speak French, teachers who don’t show up for class, and an angry minority that hates everything French.

Well played, New World Order dudes!

But don’t get me wrong. This is not Islamophobia. First and foremost, this is about Christian apostasy. Where are all the Christian men to defend the cities? They were vanquished by the Christophobes who beheaded their kings, martyred their priests, and then finished them off through infiltration and emasculation of their Catholic Church.

What we are seeing in France and Italy today is the Christ or Chaos paradigm warned against by pioneer traditional Catholics a hundred years ago. Christ the King has been banished from Europe, and the apostate politicians in power need this chaos to usher in their New World Order on the back of a Great Reset police state.

So, what’s the solution? Christ the King! Europe needs another Pope Pius V to call a Holy League to action. Catholic men need to man up. Synodality needs to be anathematized. Pachamama must be burned at the stake.

I am flying to Italy later today, where I hope to hand deliver the CIC Statement of Resistance to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.

After that, I will walk the Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage this coming Saturday. And then I will stand with Bishop Athanasius Schneider who after having been refused permission to offer the Latin Mass in St. Peter’s, will do so in the most prominent Marian church in the world – the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major. The symbolism of this appeal to the Queen Mother will not be lost on history.

But will any of this make any difference? Well, did Don John of Austria and the Holy League make any difference at Lepanto? Seems to me that we’ve got to do something to earn heaven’s confidence. With Europe in flames and the Church in global crisis, what else can we do? With rosary in hand, I’m going to go beg Our Lady of Victory to do it again.

Please watch and share this special message from the Underground as we prepare to join the traditional Catholic march on Rome to beg the Holy Father to stop the madness now! https: https://youtu.be/QLieW2C6uUE

May God help us all. I hope to see you in Rome on Saturday.

In Christo Rege,
Michael J. Matt

P.S. Here is the clip of the CIC Statement of Resistance, the transcript of which will be delivered to the Pope, please God, this coming weekend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLieW...

Before God, Holy Father, we have no choice... but to resist!

Dear Friends: After Traditionis Custodes, the line in the sand was drawn, not by us, but by the Vatican. At last week's Catholic Identity Conference, I stepped over that line.

Question is, will you come with me, or will you let them use (and abuse) obedience to cajole you into becoming a useful water carrier of the Modernist Revolution?

In my open letter, I explain to Pope Leo that we are not his enemies but rather his most loyal sons, watching and praying that "Peter’s faith will not fail him."

If it does fail him, then we will be left with no choice but to resist Leo as Paul resisted Peter, Athanasius resisted Liberius, Catherine resisted Gregory.

If, on the other hand, Leo's faith does not fail him, he will have no greater defenders in the world than us — the traditionalists. This we vow!

Either way, until we have answers from our shepherd during this global crisis of Faith, we will not let the Vatican divide and conquer us, either through excommunication or cancellation. Neither will we throw the Society of St. Pius X under the Synodal Bus. Not this time. Not again. Never again!

Traditional Catholics stand as one, INSIDE THE CHURCH, united by the faith of our fathers, the holy Latin Mass which we WILL have no matter how far, no matter how long it takes:

"Your Holiness, we respectfully demand that you respect our rightful liturgical aspirations as guaranteed by Saint Pius V in Quo Primum, and as restored by Pope John Paul II in Ecclesia Dei, and Pope Benedict XVI in Summorum Pontificum.

"If the Latin Mass is not restored, then in the spirt of St. Paul who resisted Peter to his face, we whose first responsibility is the salvation of the souls of our children — will have no choice but to do the same."

This week’s Underground includes the entire closing statement, addressed to the pope at CIC 2026. Before you decide if I have gone too far, please watch/read the statement.

If you agree that I have made the case for resistance, please sign and share this: https://youtu.be/MscffrlACuI?si=W8w48...

If you disagree, please tell me how I have failed to make the case. And, either way, let's agree to pray together for Peter that his faith will not fail him. (Luke 22:32)

How to get Catholic Identity Conference talks for FREE

Dear Friends:

GREAT NEWS! We took a chance, trusted Providence, and you did the rest! For the first time ever, we decided – given the high cost of living right now – to make the Catholic Identity Conference livestream free of charge. We asked you to drop a tip in the tip jar if you supported the CIC, and you did!

I am happy to report that after getting the word out to over a hundred thousand livestreamers, enough donations came in for us to pay our tech team and even tip our volunteers.

After the huge success of the event – which included three bishops on the roster, as well as many priests, two top Vatican journalists, Hungary’s ambassador to the Vatican, a missionary nun, and several lay Catholic activists – we have decided to push Providence a little further by offering the entire CIC video package for free, as well.

For us, the main point is to spread and defend the truth. So, for the next week or so, we will be offering another talk from this year’s Catholic Identity Conference each day. We hope you will watch the talks and, most importantly, share them with your friends and family.

I also need you to consider dropping a tip in the tip jar so I can not only make this happen but also begin building the infrastructure for CIC 2027. (Early registration is already open at The Remnant website)

Please, if you support what we’re trying to do, hit the donate button below and leave a tip of any size. I’ll do the rest: www.remnantnewspaper.com/donate-today/

Don’t forget to tell your friends. Don’t lose hope, unite the clans, and we’ll C U @ CIC 2027.

Elvis in the Sanctuary: Bill Buckley vs Bishop Sheen

Dear Friends: Just five years after the close of the Second Vatican Council, the conservative powerhouse, William F. Buckley, challenged the late, great Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen’s assertion that Vatican II ushured in a springtime for the Catholic Church.

Even as early as 1970, Buckley was citing statistical indicators of what he considered to be the massive failure of Vatican II. Sheen’s response: “It’s going to take a long time for the yeast to work through the dough.”

Check out this fascinating exchange between two Catholic heavyweights and their divergence of opinion over the Council that continues to this day as the fundamental line of demarcation between the Traditional Catholic and the Neo-Catholic point of view.

So, who was right? Was Vatican II a massive failure, as Buckley suggested it was, or has Sheen’s more positive approach turned out to be closer to the mark? What really happened at Vatican II – revolution, or renewal?

Also, in this Underground, a bizarre clip that may help us better understand the issue – It’s Elvis Presley, standing in a traditional Catholic church sanctuary, blasting away on his guitar while a traditional habited nun (played by Mary Tyler Moore) ogles the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll from the pews. Two elderly ladies look on in disbelief, trying to wrap their minds around the apparent collapse of the sacred. This is a clip that sings a thousand words.

Plus, the beatification of Fulton J. Sheen. In this Underground, I take a more nuanced approach to one of the most influential Catholic leaders of the Twentieth Century. My take has more to do with the Revolution than the beatification.

What cannot be denied is that Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen helped far too many people save their souls for us to rush to judgment. Any dolt can canonize him because he was famous and he was one of ours. Similarly, any dolt can condemn him with 20/20 hindsight for failing to immediately see through the orchestrated confusion of the most deceptive revolution in history.

Archbishop Sheen deserves our prayerful reflection on his life, his body of work, and the Revolution that defined his generation. Watch it and let me know what you think. https://youtu.be/SDUaxZS5ZbA?si=QeCNg...

In Christo Rege,
Michael J. Matt

P.S. Next week, the largest annual traditional Catholic conference will take place in Pittsburgh, PA. We are offering the CIC Livestream free of charge to 100,000 viewers. Watch and see how you can become one of them. C u @ CIC!

A JOURNEY OF HOPE: Dialogue Trumps Dogma

Dear Friends: In this week's Underground I look back at the fun collection of Modernists and Socialists who hijacked Vatican II: "The Vatican II Coup: Profiling the Men Who Wrecked the Church." One of them, by the way, Cardinal Joseph Seunens, was accused of being a closet Freemason, which is sort of ironic, actually, since he's the one who infamously waxed rhapsodic over Vatican II as the “French Revolution of the Catholic Church.” (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, my lodge brother!)

But wait, there’s more. As luck would have it, the guy who wrote the foreword to Cardinal Suenens’ book on the God of Surprises was none other than the leader of the Saint Gallen’s Mafia – the Deep Church nutters who made sure Cardinal Bergoglio replaced Pope Benedict XVI.

Sounds like something out of a Malachi Martin novel. Right? Funny you should say that, since Malachi Martin is in this week’s Underground, too. Did you know he used to write for The Remnant?

And how did Malachi Martin go from secretary to Cardinal Bea – the guy responsible for Nostra Aetate, celebrated this week by Pope Leo and Cardinal Fernandez – to a regular columnist for The Remnant? It's all in this week's Underground. https://youtu.be/sQ7KODrBSa8?si=tNJZs...

While I have you, what happened to this year's Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage (SPP) to St. Peter’s? First the Vatican excommunicated the SSPX, now they’re telling the thirty-five most obedient Catholic organizations behind the SPP to pound sand.

For nine months, the organizers have been waiting to hear back on their request to meet with Pope Leo. Nothing so far, other than a Vatican announcement that Bishop Schneider will not be permitted to offer Latin Mass in St Peter’s for this year’s SPP.

So much for the politics of appeasement. “If you disobey me, I will throw you out. If you obey me, I will treat you like you had a serious head injury.” Got to love that Synodal selective listening!

By the way and in case you haven’t heard – Traditional Catholicism was responsible for the Holocaust, at least according to the Vatican’s most important dialogue partners. I’ve got clips in the new Underground…. if you can stomach the Christophobia.

The good news? The ghost of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre is obviously going head-to-head with the Spirit of Synodality, and the hippies and boomers in charge have no idea what to do about that. The original Modernists who hijacked Vatican II are dead and buried, and the specter of Tradition rising worldwide has thrown the new kids on the Tiber into a tailspin. Want proof? In this week’s Underground, I’ve got big Catholic Identity Conference news: https://youtu.be/sQ7KODrBSa8?si=AeJZU...

Are we depressed? Heck, no! Clarity is never depressing. The Revolution failed to deceive or intimidate us. We’re still here. All for the greater hoor and glory of God! I’m fired up and ready to rumble. See you in Pittsburgh.

Does Obedience Have Limits?

Dear Friends: One need not be a mystic these days to recognize the telltale signs of Divine chastisement. We are living in a kind of Hell on earth, where our leaders are madmen, our homes are broken, our babies are aborted, our streets are warzones, and there is a veritable tsunami of confusion coming out of Rome.

We turn to our priests for answers, only to find most of them obsessed with rainbows, climate change, and unicorns.

We turn to our pope for answers, only to find him blessing those rainbows, writing encyclicals that read like an Al Gore hot flash, and insisting that “all religions are pathways to God.” But is this the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

St. Paul says that if even an angel from heaven should preach a Gospel other than that given by Jesus Christ, let him be anathema. I’m quite sure I’m not the only Catholic to have said the quiet part out loud: If an angel could preach a false Gospel, what about a pope? When the first pope tried that, St. Paul resisted him to his face.

So, it happens. And the question for us is: If it happens today, what do we do? Our Lady of La Salette took it up a notch: “Rome will lose the faith and become the seat of the antichrist.” So, if that could happen theoretically, what do we do if it happens today?

It gets pretty murky, which is why the sheep tend to scatter when the shepherd is struck. But this gets to the heart of the current debate over the SSPX. And in my new Underground, I ask critics of the SSPX:

1) Do you believe the “state of necessity” is a theoretical impossibility (in which case the SSPX has no case)?
2) Do you accept that, although it is possible, we are simply not there yet?

How you answer this determines war or peace in your family. Because if you believe #2, then this is a prudential debate over which good Catholics can disagree. The circular firing squad collapses into a perfectly legitimate discussion over the severity of the crisis in the Church.

In my new Underground, I do not presume to answer this question for you. But I do ask you to help me answer it for all of us. Why? Because it is the most important question of our time: If Peter’s faith should fail him (as Our Lord warned it could), what do we do?

So, rather than anathematizing each other over this (as the woke Vatican would like), let’s pray for each other, pray for the pope, and debate this like brothers in Christ during the worst revolution in the Church we all love more than life itself.

Unite the clans and like and share this important Underground: https://youtu.be/fXEygHMBu1g?si=cy8F5...

Why Did Archbishop Lefebvre Dedicate his Society to Pope Pius X?

Dear Friends: Archbishop Lefebvre was a Council Father at the Second Vatican Council. In 1987 – the year before he defied the Vatican by consecrating bishops without papal mandate – he wrote a book titled “They Have Uncrowned Him” on the subversion of orthodoxy by Vatican II.

Far from a reckless renegade, this personal friend of Pope Pius XII and head of the Holy Ghost Fathers was absolutely convinced that his beloved Church was suffering a state of emergency whose roots had been exposed 80 years earlier by Pope Pius X in PASCENDI DOMINICI GREGIS, ON THE DOCTRINES OF THE MODERNISTS.

On September 8, 1907, the greatest pope of the Twentieth Century promulgated the most prophetic encyclical of the Twentieth Century, urgently warning against what he called the “synthesis of all heresies” which, if left unchecked, would destroy the human element of the Catholic Church.

Three years later, in 1910, he mandated every Catholic priest take the Oath Against Modernism. The prophet-pope was attempting to kill the coming new world order in its cradle.

If you want to understand what has happened to the Catholic Church today, you need only read Pascendi. Let me give you just the second paragraph of Pascendi:

“That We make no delay in this matter is rendered necessary especially by the fact that the partisans of error are to be sought not only among the Church's open enemies; they lie hid… in her very bosom and heart... We allude, Venerable Brethren, to . . . Catholic laity…and the ranks of the priesthood itself, who, feigning a love for the Church….[and] thoroughly imbued with the poisonous doctrines taught by the enemies of the Church… vaunt themselves as reformers of the Church and … assail all that is most sacred in the work of Christ, not sparing even the person of the Divine Redeemer, whom… they reduce to a simple, mere man.”

I’m just old enough to remember when those same "reformers" went ahead and "reformed" the entire Roman Rite. As Pius had predicted, Catholic churches have been closing ever since.

In my new Underground, I explain how the Novus Ordo of Vatican II is connected to the New World Order and the Great Apostasy – and how it all could have been prevented if the world had only listened to Saint Pius X.

And why is the Vatican at war with the Society of Saint Pius X? Because the Vatican is teeming with Modernists who are still battling the spirit of the one bishop at Vatican II who'd called them out for uncrowning Christ the King.

The war goes on, in other words, and we are all at the heart of it. St. Pius X famously said that the “true friends of the people are neither the innovators nor the revolutionaries, but the traditionalists.” That's you, that's all of us. So, in the spirit of St. Pius X, let's resist these 'partisans of error' to their faces.

Watch and share my new Underground: "MARXIST REVOLUTION: The Real Reason Pope Leo is Preaching Gaudium et Spes:" https://youtu.be/fL3HHgIXPYE?si=zQ76O...

Pope Saint Pius X, pray for us.

In Christo Rege,
Michael J. Matt

A Message from Little Lucy

Dear Friends: If you’re a practicing Catholic, I have a question for you: Do you believe in Angels? Serious question. Do you honestly believe that you have a guardian angel?

In my new Underground, I get back to basics, because I earnestly want to know if Catholics still believe what Catholics have always believed. Do we believe, for example, that Jesus Christ instituted Seven Sacraments that are necessary for salvation?

The reason I ask is because the Modernist revolution inside the Catholic Church has been chipping away at these basic Catholic beliefs all our lives. And I want to know how many of us have held on.

Dolly Parton died this week. May God be merciful to her. She wasn’t Catholic. But when she died, many Catholics took to social media to share their opinion that she went straight heaven. And for this reason, Dolly’s passing shines light on how successful the Revolution has been. Because if Dolly went straight to heaven – as Father James Martin and his America Magazine said she did – then how important are the Seven Sacraments anymore? Dolly never went to Confession. She never received Our Lord in Holy Communion. Did not even have benefit of the Last Rites or a Requiem.

So, the question asks itself: If non-Catholics don’t need the Sacraments to be saved, how important can they be? And if salvation outside of the Catholic Church is now guaranteed to all nice people who die, how important can the Catholic Church be anymore?

This is not about Dolly Parton. This is about us. It’s not Dolly’s fault that the post-Vatican II popes have been sounding an uncertain trumpet for decades. It’s not her fault that Catholic priests don’t talk about the four last things very much at all anymore. It’s not her fault that from Pope Francis’s infamous “who am I to judge,” to his “all religions are pathways to God,” to Pope Leo’s recent admonition that we not cling to “religious certainties” – the world has gotten the message – everyone’s saved and, if Hell exists, nobody’s in it!

And that, my friends, is the crisis that Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre targeted with laser like precision back in 1972, as I explain in this Underground, which I hope you’ll watch, share, and discuss: https://youtu.be/rO2S4N1FcZE?si=_yn1k...

In Christo Rege,
Michael J. Matt

P.S. Also in this week’s Underground, my very personal presentation of the love of my life – grandchild Lucy -- a little Rett baby who will likely never talk but who has an important message for the pro-abort “Catholic” governor of Massachusetts. After posting this week's Underground, I have been truly overwhelmed by expressions of support and love and promises of prayer for Little Lucy. Thank you! And may God bless you all!

"Catholic" Marxism & L'Affaire SSPX

Dear Friends: In this RTV Short, I comment on what the Vatican is really doing with respect to the Society of St. Pius X. HINT: "The issue is never the issue. The issue is always the Revolution."

This maxim -- which originated among 1960s radical Marxist groups -- can be applied to the Vatican's grievances against the SSPX, which are not the true end goal, but rather tools used by these promoters of the New Order to permanently overturn the old Catholic order.

In fact, it could even be said that here the Vatican is taking a page out of Saul Alinsky's tactical philosophy manual, "Rules for Radicals."

Still, while good men will come down on both sides of the SSPX controversy, it is obvious that the Vatican's end game is not to save souls from the mortal sin of schism but rather to promote the Modernist Revolution by excommunicating those defending 2000 years of Catholic Tradition.

It's the SSPX today, and the rest of us tomorrow. How do I know? Because the issue is never the issue. The issue is always the Revolution!
