Hello Friends,
My name is Fatmata, the creative behind Traditionally Inspired. Meaningful Art. I am an artist, counselor, sewing enthusiast, fabric petter, button admirer, and sewist with a lot of energy! My West African heritage instilled a deep appreciation for bright bold colors and prints; my faith has helped me hone in on a modest and feminine aesthetic, and my busy life has allowed me to relish the slow pace of garment sewing. I truly view my sewing practice as artistic expression. I love sharing my wins, learning moments, happy discoveries, intense love of vintage notions and trims, and of course, BEAUTIFUL FABRICS over on this channel!

If you would like to support the channel further, I am fueled by Kofi :) ko-fi.com/timabyfk

Things have been non-stop over here (work, prepping the kids for back to school, a new nephew, work travel, hosting guests, end of summer cleaning, more work… you get the idea) and I’ve gotten hardly any personal sewing done this month.
But, I had a lovely birthday this weekend and I wanted to show you my birthday dress!

I made it on my birthday morning, before a four hour drive to NYC. It may have caused a weeee bit of stress, but it feels worth it for this outcome! I’ll have to sit and record a true catch up video about this dress and the few things I’ve gotten up to in the sewing room this month.

In the mean time, I FINALLY posted a Project G Street Recap video (it has taken me weeks to finally edit) about our Project Runway style sewing competition! We had a blast and placed first. I hope you check out the video and tell me what you think of our final garment!

Thanks for stopping by, and happy sewing!

Tomorrow, Tishana, ‪@Auset728‬, and I will be sewing in the Project G Street challenge at the Montgomery County Fair. Sewing for hours with fellow sewists, and sending our garments down the runway at 6PM in Heritage Hall. I CANNOT WAIT!

We had fun picking out our fabric from the $3.97 section last week and are so excited to bring our vision to life tomorrow.

If you're attending the Montgomery County Fair tomorrow, August 9th mcagfair.com/
Join us in Heritage Hall at 6 PM for the runway :)

Things have been so busy the last few weeks, I haven't had a chance to share this exciting news, but I hope to share a video of the experience in the coming weeks.

WISH US LUCK!

This is not a drill! The beautiful tablecloth that I thrifted about three years ago has been pressed and is turning into the dress of my dreams. I couldn’t be happier with this project so far. This was a Make Nine 2024 fabric that I didn’t get to, but it was worth the wait.

It was tricky to determine the placement of my pattern pieces to make the most of the fabric available, but I’m so pleased with my final choice.

Given the large sections of airy lace detail, I’m now thinking through how I’d like to finish the seams.

Swipe right to see the dress basted together in my first try on! I can’t wait to finish it!

This will definitely be included the #PatternHackathon2025 once I finish it. I used M8147 and M8064.

What do you think so far?
Let me know in the comment!

No video this weekend because… it’s wedding weekend. But, it’s also #MeMadeMay2024. So, here I am with my Bestie in our me mades for day one of her marriage launch party weekend (ie. wedding weekend). I’m wearing my S9114 dress hack made in a gorgeous spring time cotton voile, and Bestie is in the Viki Sews Estella dress I made in a silk mikado. Bonus, she found more of this fabric and made this cute shoulder bow as an accent, what a wonderful tag team!
Hope you have a great weekend and we will catch up soon ❤️🤗

While I'm away until the new year, I thought I'd finally release the video revealing my fabric and trim purchases from my trip to Guinea in July '23. Unfortunately, the upload cut off the last 10 minutes which was a reflection on the actual trip, not sure what happened :(
I hope you still enjoy the video, but my apologies that it ends abruptly. Not sure if it's worth uploading the last 10 minutes for those who care to hear about the trip. But enjoy!

Best,
Fatmata

Is there anyone from this fabulous community in Paris? What sewing gems would I sewist need to have on their must-visit list while in Paris over the festive season Dec 16-30? Asking for a friend, please leave recommendations below! Of course, I've recommended the ‪@TheCrafterpreneur‬'s Paris fabric shopping video, but let me know if there is anything else (museums, shops, crafty things, light's show, just overall fun!)

In case you missed it, my best friend and I sit down for a chat about returning to sewing, and two new festive makes (in case you are sewing for the holidays too).
If you would love to have a sewing buddy in real life, I think it's a good watch. It may give you ideas about how to inspire a friend you already have to take up sewing, or what sorts of guidance and support you can offer a new sewist, or at the least I hope it feels like you're sitting with friends enjoying a fun sewing catch-up.

Comment on the video with any tips you'd pass on to a new sewist, or let us know if our chat resonates you!

Happy Sewing,
Fatmata

Hi Friends, I’m here with happy news to report.

1) My bestie is back at the machine like she never left! Look at this shirt she’s creating! She’s making a matching his and her set for the Friendmas party she’s hosting soon: S9157 (view B) men’s camp style shirt & S8641 (view C) Burnside bib from Sew House Seven. It’s been fun collaborating and bouncing creative ideas off each other while she’s been over here sewing!

2) I have dusted off my Bernette 77! That’s what she’s been using and I’m looking forward to more projects with my machine again!

Happy Sewing!
