Love Costs Something—and It Is Worth It

Today’s readings reminded me that love is not simply doing whatever feels comfortable or avoiding difficult conversations.

Love asks something of us.

In Ezekiel, God calls us to be watchmen—to listen carefully and speak when necessary. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches us to address hurt honestly, first in private and with care. This kind of love requires courage, patience, humility, and responsibility.

It would be easier to remain silent. Easier to protect our comfort. Easier to say that love means accepting everything without question.

But real love seeks the good of the other person. It does not shame or condemn, but it also does not look away.

“Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love is the fulfillment of the law because love is willing to bear a cost.

Sometimes the cost is telling the truth gently.
Sometimes it is listening when we would rather defend ourselves.
Sometimes it is forgiving again.
Sometimes it is setting a boundary without hatred.

Love may cost us pride, time, comfort, or control. Yet the cost is not wasted. It creates space for healing, reconciliation, and truth.

The responsorial psalm says:

“If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”

Perhaps God is asking me not only to listen for His voice, but also to notice where my heart has become hard—toward someone who hurt me, toward a difficult conversation, or even toward myself.

Lord, teach me to love with both tenderness and courage. Help me speak when silence would cause harm, listen when pride wants to answer, and remember that where two or three gather in Your name, You are already there.

Because love is not whatever I want it to be.

Love costs something.
And it is worth it.

Sunday Scripture Reflection
Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time (8/30/26)

Today’s readings remind me that following God doesn’t always feel peaceful or easy.

I used to think that if I prayed, went to church, and made time for Him, He would answer—clearly and on time. But sometimes I’ve prayed and heard nothing back. Sometimes the silence itself has felt heavier than the struggle I brought to Him.

Jeremiah tried to remain silent, but God’s word became a fire within him. The psalmist thirsted for God like dry earth longs for water. And Jesus reminds us that following Him means taking up the cross.

Sometimes faith isn't the absence of struggle. Sometimes it’s the quiet fire that keeps burning—even when God feels distant, and the road is unclear.

This experience of praying through silence inspired my song, “Mercy for the Overwhelmed”—a prayer for the moments when we have carried too much and must trust that God's mercy is still holding us.

Lord, help me trust You in the silence, not only in the answers. Give me the courage to follow You one faithful step at a time.

Sunday Scripture Reflection
Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time (8/23/26)

“Lord, your love is eternal;
do not forsake the work of your hands.”
— Psalm 138:8

In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks His disciples:

“But who do you say that I am?”

This question is also given to each of us.

Not only, “What have you heard about Jesus?”
but, “Who is He to you—today?”

Peter answered:

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

This is more than a statement of faith. It is a personal confession—a recognition of who Jesus is and what His presence means in our lives.

Faith is not always having every answer. Sometimes, it is trusting Jesus even when His ways are difficult to understand, and continuing to follow Him one faithful step at a time.

Today, I am reflecting on this:

Who is Jesus to me—not only in what I say, but in the way I live, choose, and respond?
