What a week! Yesterday the United Nations Association Film Festival kicked off its press and publicity (2026 theme: Passion For Change), and now HEATHENS is officially out in the world.

HEATHENS will have its world premiere on Saturday, October 24 at 3:30 PM in Palo Alto, California, followed by a festival panel titled “Different Faces of Religion.”
And that’s just the beginning.

The film has also been added to the Academy Screening Room, where members of the Academy’s Documentary Branch will be able to view this year’s eligible feature documentary contenders ahead of the 99th Academy Awards.

Then, beginning October 30, HEATHENS will open a one-week Oscar-qualifying theatrical run in Los Angeles at the Laemmle NoHo, with three screenings each day through November 5.

More screenings are expected this fall in New York, London, Amsterdam and other cities as the film continues its For Your Consideration campaign.

HEATHENS has officially been selected for the 29th United Nations Association Film Festival at Stanford.

The documentary was selected by jury from nearly 600 submissions for this year’s festival, themed Passion for Change.

I’m one of five people featured in the film, each navigating what it means to stop hiding a change in belief and deal with the very real consequences that come with choosing honesty over conformity.

One of the unexpected gifts of this project has been the people I’ve gotten to share it with. My castmates have become friends, and some of them have already been introduced to many of you through conversations on my channel. We came into this project with different stories and different experiences, but there’s something about having your life documented alongside other people that creates a bond all its own.

What makes this selection especially significant is UNAFF’s connection to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 18 protects freedom of thought, conscience and religion—including the freedom to change what you believe.
So a documentary about people exercising the freedom to change their beliefs has been selected by a festival grounded in the recognition that doing so is a human right.
