India saw $21 billion in foreign equity outflows in FY26, followed by another $16.5 billion in FY27 through October 23.
Now, global brokerage Jefferies believes a capital gains tax cut could help bring foreign money back.
But how could the government make it happen?
Jefferies has outlined three possible routes:
- Reduce both long-term and short-term capital gains tax rates for investors.
- Offer foreign portfolio investors a lower long-term capital gains tax rate.
- Calculate foreign investors' gains in US dollars instead of rupees, potentially offering exchange-rate-related tax relief.
Here's the catch: India collected βΉ1.3 lakh crore from equity LTCG tax in FY25. Any reduction could mean lower government revenue.
There is also a precedent. Following tax relief for eligible foreign investors in government bonds, debt inflows reached $9 billion during JuneβJuly 2026.
Could similar relief attract money into Indian stocks and support the rupee? Possibly. But taxes are only one part of the equation.
