Robotic Spine Surgery: Bringing Precision, Safety & Confidence to Spine Care

I am pleased to share my recent articles in Sakal on the evolving role of robotic spine surgery.

Robotics is transforming spine surgery by enhancing accuracy in implant placement, supporting minimally invasive techniques, and providing greater confidence in complex procedures.

Today, robotic guidance is increasingly useful in:
• Minimally invasive spinal fusion
• Revision spine surgery
• Complex scoliosis & kyphosis correction
• Cervical pedicle screw fixation
• C1–C2 fixation
• Complex spinal tumour surgery

Beyond technology, one of the most important changes is patient confidence. With better planning, navigation and precision, the fear surrounding spine surgery—particularly concerns about neurological complications—is increasingly being addressed.

Robotic spine surgery is not about replacing the surgeon; it is about empowering the surgeon with greater precision and better information.

I believe this technology, combined with sound surgical judgment and minimally invasive principles, is poised to be a game changer in complex spine care.

**Robotic Spine Surgery: Precision, Safety And accuracy
Robotic-assisted spine surgery is an important advancement in modern spine care. It helps the surgeon plan and perform spinal procedures with enhanced precision, accuracy and safety—particularly when placing screws and implants in complex spinal anatomy.

Robotics can be especially useful in:

- Minimally invasive spine surgery
- Scoliosis and kyphosis correction
- Complex spinal deformities
- Revision spine surgery
- Spinal tumor surgery
- Long-segment spinal fusions
- Selected minimally invasive endoscopic spine procedures

A common misconception is that a robot replaces the surgeon or performs the operation independently. In reality, the robot is an advanced guidance tool. It assists the surgeon in planning the procedure and improving the accuracy of execution, while the surgeon remains fully responsible for every clinical decision and surgical step.

The true strength of robotic spine surgery lies in combining advanced technology with the experience, judgment and skill of the spine surgeon.

Better planning. Greater precision. Safer spine surgery.

Minimally Invasive TLIF (Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion) is an advanced lumbar spine fusion procedure for selected patients with conditions such as lumbar spondylolisthesis, commonly involving the L4–L5 or L5–S1 levels.

Using a muscle-sparing technique—with O-arm imaging, navigation, robotic guidance, and endoscopic assistance where appropriate—the procedure aims to decompress affected nerves and stabilise the spine with greater precision.

Potential advantages over conventional open fusion surgery include a smaller incision, less blood loss, reduced muscle injury, shorter operating time, earlier mobilisation, faster recovery, and potentially less stress on adjacent spinal segments.

Appropriate patient selection and a personalised surgical plan remain essential for the best outcome.

When the Spine Bends: Understanding Scoliosis & Kyphosis

The spine is designed to be strong, flexible, and balanced. But sometimes, abnormal curvatures such as scoliosis (sideways curvature) and kyphosis (excessive forward curvature) can develop.

These spinal deformities can occur at any age—from a newborn baby to an elderly individual in their 80s. The causes may vary with age, ranging from congenital and developmental conditions in children to degeneration, osteoporosis, fractures, and other age-related changes in adults.

The good news is that modern spine care has evolved tremendously. A large proportion of spinal deformities can be managed without surgery, depending on the severity, age, symptoms, and progression of the curve.

Treatment may include:
• Bracing
• Physical therapy and targeted exercises
• Yoga and stretching
• Schroth-based scoliosis exercises
• Osteoporosis evaluation and appropriate medications
• Regular observation and monitoring of the curvature

When surgery is genuinely required—particularly in younger patients with significant or progressive deformities—modern scoliosis surgery has become safer, more precise, and highly effective. With advances in technology, navigation, neuromonitoring, and surgical techniques, these procedures can be life-changing, helping children and young individuals achieve better spinal balance, function, confidence, and quality of life.

The key message is simple: a curved spine does not always mean surgery. Early evaluation, appropriate diagnosis, and timely treatment can make a significant difference.

I am happy to share this article published in Sakal, discussing scoliosis, kyphosis, spinal deformities, and the evolving approach to their treatment.

🦴 Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery | Smaller Incision, Faster Recovery

Spine surgery has evolved significantly with the advent of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS).

In this video, I discuss how modern minimally invasive techniques can help achieve effective treatment while minimizing disruption to the normal muscles and tissues.

Key advantages include:
🔹 Smaller incisions
🔹 Less blood loss
🔹 Minimal tissue and muscle disruption
🔹 Less post-operative pain
🔹 Faster recovery
🔹 Earlier return to daily activities and work

Endoscopic spine surgery and tubular spine surgery are important components of MISS, offering precise and tissue-preserving approaches for appropriately selected patients.

However, minimally invasive surgery is not necessarily the right choice for every patient. The treatment should always be individualized based on the diagnosis, symptoms, imaging and overall health.

I am also happy to share my recent article on Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery published in Sakal, where I discuss these advances and their role in modern spine care.

The goal is simple: effective treatment with minimal surgical trauma and faster recovery.
