There was a place beneath Notre Dame’s LaFortune Student Center called The Nazz.

No arena. No elaborate stage. Just a basement, a guitar, a microphone—and Notre Dame students playing for other Notre Dame students.

In the late 1970s and early ’80s, you could wander downstairs and hear jazz, folk, soft rock, open-stage performers and musicians like **Rich Prezioso and Rick Walters**.

It’s where I first remember hearing “Amie” and “Desperado”—not on the radio or a record, but played live by another student a few feet away.

And the story eventually leads upstairs to WSND-FM, a live Rick Walters broadcast, two reel-to-reel tape machines…and the night a listener called to tell us we’d been broadcasting the show backwards.

Using old issues of The Observer and Scholastic, along with memories from those years, our new Chesterton Radio Deep Dive goes looking for a nearly forgotten piece of Notre Dame life.
