#Photos: Chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' echoed through the streets of Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, including Pune, on Monday as Ganesh idols of all sizes made their way to homes and decorated neighbourhood pandals, setting the stage for a grand 11-day festival.

From the bustling, narrow alleys of Lalbaug in central Mumbai to elaborate neighbourhood pandals ( temporary, decorated stages) adorned with breathtaking artwork, the annual homecoming of the beloved deity transforms the city, binding it together in faith and celebration.

The festivities will culminate on Anant Chaturdashi (September 25), when the cherished idols are carried in grand processions to water bodies for their final ritual immersions.

The BRICS should leverage its close ties with emerging markets and the Global South to safeguard supply chains and build a large integrated market, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Sunday as he proposed a five-point initiative to boost cooperation in manufacturing, trade and technology.

In his address at the concluding session of the BRICS Summit, Xi said the Global South should jointly “defend” the rule of law in international affairs, safeguard the basic norms of global relations including sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, and work towards peaceful settlement of disputes” in line with international law.

The annual summit of BRICS—a grouping of 11 major emerging economies representing around 49.5 per cent of the global population and 40 per cent of global GDP—concluded with all leading member nations calling for a better global governance and trading architecture to navigate current challenges.

The seven-day protest by farmers affiliated with various unions that are part of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has been called off after the Punjab Government conceded to their demands, including convening a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to take up issues concerning the state’s river waters and farming.

Farmer leaders, who had been protesting at the Chandigarh-Mohali border since last Tuesday, said the state government had agreed to their demands, including convening a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha within a month. The government has agreed to seek reconsideration of existing water agreements and pass a resolution against provisions of the Punjab Reorganisation Act relating to the sharing of river waters.

The Punjab cabinet on Sunday passed a resolution objecting to the appointment of the new Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Cabinet has appealed to the President, Prime Minister and Punjab Governor that the oath of office should not be administered to Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, who has been appointed the new Chief Justice, until the state government gives its consent.

The Punjab Government has alleged that the Centre was “doing injustice to Punjab” by taking unilateral decisions on matters concerning the state.

A 50-year-old five-storey building housing a boys' hostel collapsed in a congested bylane in Satya Niketan near Delhi University's south campus on Sunday afternoon, leaving two dead and many people trapped, officials said.

Six people have been pulled out of the debris so far, of whom two were brought dead to the hospital and five others rescued alive, police said. Locals claimed that around 40 to 50 people were still trapped under the debris of the building, which comprised a basement and five upper floors.

Repair work was under way in the basement of the structure, which was used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation, when it collapsed at around 1.30 pm, a senior officer said. Teams of Delhi Police, NDRF, Delhi Fire Service and DDMA, along with fire tenders and CATS ambulances, reached the spot and commenced rescue operations.

In remembrance of independent India’s first air battle with Pakistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Thursday marked the anniversary of the exploits of IAF pilots over Chhamb-Jaurian in Jammu and Kashmir during the 1965 war.

“The skies over Chhamb witnessed remarkable acts of courage during the 1965 War,” the MoD said in a post on X, terming the occasion a tribute to “our combat heroes”.

“Squadron Leader Trevor Keelor and Flight Lieutenant Virendra Singh Pathania displayed exceptional gallantry during air combat on September 3-4, 1965,” it said.

The Haryana government has declared the historic Luhari Baoli, a 14th-15th century stepwell in Luhari village near Pataudi, as a protected monument and archaeological site.

Amit Kumar Agrawal, Commissioner and Secretary of the Heritage and Tourism Department, has issued a notification to this effect on August 14 under Section 4 (3) of the Haryana Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1964.

Also known as Mughlaai Baoli, the stepwell is located in Luhari village in Jhajjar district. This historical structure is notable for its three-storey design, showcasing architectural elements characteristic of the Tughlaq dynasty.

The Kishtwar Himalayas have emerged as a key stronghold for snow leopards and high-altitude wildlife in Jammu & Kashmir, according to a new report released by the Department of Wildlife Protection, Jammu & Kashmir, in collaboration with the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF).

Particularly significant was the first confirmed record of the endangered woolly flying squirrel from Kishtwar High Altitude National Park, highlighting the region’s importance for conserving rare and poorly documented Himalayan mammals.

Based on four years of systematic camera-trap surveys across six mountain landscapes, the study presents the first robust population estimates from a landscape-scale monitoring programme in Jammu & Kashmir. It establishes an important scientific baseline for long-term conservation.

The civil aviation ministry is looking at the possibility of carrying out psychoactive substance tests for all commercial pilots round the year on a random basis.

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on Tuesday said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is holding discussions with stakeholders on further strengthening the drug-testing standards for pilots.

"Right now, the rules say 10 per cent (drug tests) across the overall pilot network, but just like I said, DGCA is engaging (with stakeholders) ... One of the opinions from our side is that everyone has to go through it (drug tests) the (whole) year at a random time.”
