Deep in the cold forests of the Russian Far East and northeastern China lives a leopard unlike the ones most people picture.

Built for snow, bitter winters, and rugged forests, the Amur leopard survives at the northernmost edge of leopard country.

And with 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝟏𝟑𝟎–𝟏𝟑𝟓 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝, every individual matters.

📍 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞: Russian Far East and northeastern China
🌲 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭: Temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, mountainous woodland, and snowy forest landscapes
📏 𝐒𝐢𝐳𝐞: About 70–105 lbs (32–48 kg), with males generally larger
🎨 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐭: Pale cream to golden with large, widely spaced dark rosettes

During winter, their fur becomes exceptionally thick and can grow several inches long—helping insulate them against extreme cold.

❄️ Amur leopards are specially adapted to life in cold, snowy forests
🐾 Their large paws help them travel across snow
🌙 Solitary and elusive, they may roam large territories searching for prey
🦌 They hunt animals such as roe deer, sika deer, hares, and other mammals
🌲 Like other leopards, they are powerful climbers and may carry prey into trees

Their pale coat and widely spaced rosettes help distinguish them from leopard populations living in warmer climates.

📈 𝐀 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐎𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞
Not long ago, the Amur leopard came frighteningly close to disappearing.

At the 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲, estimates suggested that only around 𝟑𝟎 remained in the wild.

Today, conservation monitoring indicates the population has grown substantially.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐩𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐬, 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚-𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐩 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 have all helped give this cat a chance to recover.

But recovery does not mean safe.

With such a tiny population, the Amur leopard remains 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝.

When a species exists in such small numbers, the loss of even a few animals can have an enormous impact.

The Amur leopard is a top predator within one of Asia’s remarkable temperate forest ecosystems.

Protecting them helps protect:

🌲 Vast forests of the Russian Far East and northeastern China
🦌 Healthy populations of deer and other prey
🐅 Habitat shared with the Amur tiger
🐾 Wildlife corridors connecting protected areas
🌎 An entire ecosystem dependent on healthy forests

When we protect enough land for an Amur leopard to survive, we protect thousands of other plants and animals living there too.

The Amur leopard reminds us of two very different truths about conservation.

🐔 A chicken coop can help save a wild cat. 🐾

Our conservation partner, @Ocelot Working Group (OWG), has completed the first pilot chicken coops in a remote community in Linares, Nuevo León, Mexico, where residents experience conflicts with bobcats and ocelots.

For families raising chickens, losing birds to a wild predator can mean losing food and income. Helping keep poultry safe can reduce those losses—and the risk of wild cats being killed in retaliation.

Working alongside local partners and residents, OWG is putting practical solutions in place to help people and wild cats share the landscape. 💚

We’re proud to support conservation that cares for communities while protecting cats in the wild. Sometimes, coexistence starts with something as simple as a safer place for chickens.

🐆 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐭, 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐭: Its beautiful spots and rosettes help it blend into the forest surroundings.

🔬 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Recognized as a distinct species in 2026, its lineage separated from its closest relatives roughly 1.4 million years ago!

💚 𝐀 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬: Local communities already knew this cat as “Tilcayo.” Researchers kept that name, honoring knowledge passed down through generations.

Pallas’ cats have an adorable way to keep their paws warm: they rest them on their thick, fluffy tails! That built-in foot warmer provides a cozy barrier between their paws and the cold ground.

For a small wild cat living in the chilly grasslands and rocky landscapes of Central Asia, every bit of insulation helps. And that wonderfully fluffy coat? There’s a whole lot of fur around a surprisingly small cat!

Practical. Cozy. Still looking slightly annoyed. 😸
