🇳🇵 NEPAL’S ODI STATUS IS UNDER SERIOUS THREAT: HERE ARE THE TWO PATHS TO SURVIVAL

Nepal’s road to retaining its ODI status beyond the current ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 cycle is becoming increasingly difficult. With the team struggling for results, Nepal now faces two possible pathways.

🟢 PATH 1: FINISH IN THE TOP 4 OF CWC LEAGUE 2

This is the best and most secure route.

The top four teams in the eight-team ICC Men’s CWC League 2 automatically advance to the 2027 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. A top-four finish therefore keeps Nepal in the main qualification pathway and secures its place among the teams competing for the 2027 World Cup.

Nepal’s League 2 campaign has become extremely difficult after a poor run of results, including four consecutive defeats during the July 2026 tri-series in the Netherlands against the Netherlands and Namibia.

Nepal currently has 24 points from 32 matches, leaving only four matches remaining.

🇳🇵 Maximum possible points: 32

To have any realistic chance of climbing into the top four, Nepal would need to win all four remaining matches and hope that teams above them drop enough points.

Their remaining League 2 matches are scheduled against Canada and Oman in October 2026.

🟠 PATH 2: THE CWC QUALIFIER PLAY-OFF

If Nepal finishes outside the top four in League 2, the World Cup dream is not immediately over.

The bottom four League 2 teams will enter the 2027 CWC Qualifier Play-off, where they will be joined by the top four teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League. That means an eight-team tournament will determine which teams continue toward the World Cup Qualifier.

This is Nepal’s second chance — but also the danger zone.

The top four teams from the Qualifier Play-off will progress to the 2027 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

For Nepal, reaching that top four would keep its World Cup qualification hopes alive and preserve its place in the higher tier of the qualification pathway.

However, finishing outside the required positions could result in Nepal dropping to the Challenge League, putting its ODI future beyond the 2027 qualification cycle at serious risk.

🚨 SO, WHAT DOES NEPAL ACTUALLY NEED?

🇳🇵 Best-case scenario:
➡️ Finish Top 4 in League 2
➡️ Directly qualify for the 2027 CWC Qualifier
➡️ Avoid the dangerous Play-off route

🔥 If Nepal finishes Bottom 4:
➡️ Enter the 8-team CWC Qualifier Play-off
➡️ Face the bottom four League 2 teams + four Challenge League teams
➡️ Finish in the Top 4 to advance to the CWC Qualifier

💔 If Nepal fails again in the Play-off:
➡️ World Cup qualification hopes could end
➡️ Nepal could drop into the Challenge League
➡️ Its ODI future beyond this qualification cycle could be at risk
