May I ask why LGBTQIA+ acceptance is still such a controversial topic? Is it because of religion, or more specifically, the way certain people interpret and use their religious beliefs? Because, genuinely, how does believing in God automatically justify discriminating against someone who believes differently from you? I understand that religion is deeply important to many people, and I'm not saying that religious beliefs are inherently hateful or that everyone who follows a religion is against the LGBTQIA+ community. But there is a HUGE difference between practising your religion and using it as a justification to deny other people the same respect, dignity, and freedom that you expect for yourself. Your beliefs are yours to follow, but why should they determine how someone ELSE gets to live their life? I do not follow any religion, and I am not forcing you to abandon yours or believe the same things as me. So why should I be forced to believe in God just because “He is our Lord” or turn to religion? And why should someone who is part of the LGBTQIA+ community be expected to suppress their identity just because another person interprets their religious text as saying that who they are is wrong? You have every right to practise your faith, but that right does not automatically extend to controlling other people's lives. Freedom of religion does not mean freedom to impose your religion on everyone else.

What is this, repeating history or some shit? Before anyone misunderstands my point, I am NOT saying that modern anti-LGBTQIA+ discrimination is the same as the residential school system in Canada. The severity, circumstances, and historical context are different, and pretending otherwise would be disrespectful to Indigenous survivors and their families. HOWEVER, there IS a connection worth discussing. For generations, the Canadian government worked alongside Christian churches to forcibly assimilate Indigenous children into settler society. More than 150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children attended residential schools, where the system sought to separate them from their families and suppress their cultures, languages, and identities. Christian religious instruction was imposed as part of this assimilation, and many children experienced abuse and neglect. These schools were not simply the result of religion alone; they were part of a wider colonial system supported by government policies and institutions. (Sources: [National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation](nctr.ca/education/residential-school-history/) and [Parks Canada](www.parcs.canada.ca/culture/designation/pensionnat…)

So, what is the point I'm trying to make? **When religious beliefs are used to justify controlling other people's lives, denying their identities, or treating them as inferior, the consequences can be devastating.** The situations may be different, but the question remains: WHY should someone's personal beliefs give them the authority to decide how another person is allowed to live? The residential school system demonstrates the devastating consequences of a government and religious institutions imposing their beliefs and values on Indigenous communities. Modern anti-LGBTQIA+ discrimination is not equivalent to that system, but it raises an important question about the use of personal beliefs to justify unequal treatment. So why are we STILL arguing over whether people deserve basic respect because of who they are?

And no, I am NOT saying that all religious people are hateful or that religion itself is responsible for every act of oppression. Plenty of religious people support the LGBTQIA+ community, and people can practise their faith without discriminating against anyone. But that is EXACTLY my point. You can follow your religion without forcing it onto others. You can disagree with someone without stripping them of their dignity. You can believe whatever you want without expecting the entire world to live by your personal interpretation of a religious text.

YOUR BELIEFS ARE YOURS. THEY ARE NOT UNIVERSAL RULES THAT EVERYONE ELSE IS OBLIGATED TO FOLLOW. Freedom of religion should mean that people can practise their faith without being forced to abandon it, but it should ALSO mean that people who follow different religions, or no religion at all, are entitled to the same freedom. You do NOT have to agree with someone's identity to respect their right to exist without discrimination.

SO PLEASE, GET UR ASS OUT OF THE GUTTER AND UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR RELIGION DOES NOT GIVE YOU AUTHORITY OVER EVERYONE ELSE'S LIFE. HISTORY HAS ALREADY SHOWN US THE DAMAGE THAT CAN BE DONE WHEN PEOPLE IN POWER USE THEIR BELIEFS TO JUSTIFY OPPRESSION. WHY THE HELL WOULD WE WANT TO KEEP REPEATING THAT PATTERN? LET PEOPLE BELIEVE WHAT THEY WANT, LOVE WHO THEY WANT, BE WHO THEY ARE, AND LIVE THEIR FUCKING LIVES IN PEACE, OMG.
