You’re like a rose.

Beautiful.
Sweet.
You stick out from the rest,
standing tall on your stem.

But oh, that’s not even the start.
The list goes on and on,
because under the rays of the sun,
that’s how you are.

But how about when it’s dark,
and the trees aren’t the only shade anymore?

When the stars shine bright
with their twinkling lights,
you’re still a rose.

Thorns of steel,
waiting to poke,
to shatter the love I tried to give.

Not gentle.
You never have been.

Yet why am I still here?
Why do I hold onto the stem
when it makes me bleed?

I suppose it’s because
the petals smell so sweet,
and the thorns have such a tight grasp on me
they won’t let me leave.

I suddenly can’t breathe.

The smell of the rose
isn’t so sweet anymore.

It’s bitter.
Angry.

I don’t love roses as much,
I always did like daisies better.
