World According To Briggs

Twenty-five years ago today, our country suffered a tragedy I’ll never forget. And in the middle of remembering that awful week, there’s a memory of my son Thor that’s stayed with me just as clearly.

We’d spent weeks planning a trip to Magic Mountain for September 11th. School would be back in after summer, the crowds would be smaller, and I was letting him take a day off so we could ride roller coasters together. A little questionable parenting in the name of shorter lines. We were both looking forward to it.

Then we woke up that morning and saw what was happening in New York City.

Like everyone else, I was trying to make sense of something that didn’t seem possible. I figured Magic Mountain would be closed, but I called anyway for Thor. They confirmed it, and I told him we could try again tomorrow. He was crushed. He was a kid who’d been counting down to a day with his dad, and suddenly everything had changed.

The next morning, they told me they were open, so we went. But when we pulled into that massive parking lot, there were maybe six cars in the whole place. I was pissed. I’d called, they’d said they were open, and now it looked like I’d dragged my disappointed kid all the way out there for another letdown.

We walked up to the gate mostly because I wanted Thor to know I wasn’t bullshitting him. I was ready for somebody to tell us they were closed.

To my astonishment… they were open.

For the next five hours, we rode every ride worth riding. There were more employees than visitors. On some coasters, we’d pull back into the station and the guy would look at us and say, “Wanna go again?” That’s a pretty ridiculous question to ask a kid and his dad when neither one has anywhere else they need to be.

We rode Batman three times in a row, in the front seat. No getting off and walking around. Just sitting there together, ready for another lap. We’d planned on smaller crowds, but having what felt like an entire amusement park to ourselves was beyond anything we’d imagined.

I think about that trip every September. There’s a sadness attached to when it happened that’ll always be there. So many families had just lost someone they would’ve given anything to spend another ordinary day with. Looking back, I’m grateful I got that time with my boy.

At the time, I knew we were having a great day. Twenty-five years later, I can tell you it was one of the greatest father-son days I’ve ever had. I can still picture us sitting in that front seat, hearing, “Wanna go again?”

I’d give a whole lot to go again with that little boy.

This is random, but a woman I ran into at Portland International Airport told me that, while visiting the Vatican, one of the officials said they love watching YouTube. He named a few of the channels they watch, and World According to Briggs was one of them.
