For the Feast of Saint Francis, we have our pets....I mean fur people blessed at the Church. For those of us with fur people, (or scale people, feathered people, do not want to leave anyone out), who have realized the smell of the carrier has emerged and have now morphed into starfish like creatures to avoid what might be a trip to the V-E-T, (can not even think it or they will know the word has been uttered), here is a less stressful way of having your pets blessed. (You could of course invite your Priest for dinner and already have the holy water just waiting, and oh, since he is there....how could he say, "no" to your fluff muffin. Not condoning this action... Just saying it would not hurt...). Anyway, there is an alternative to packs and scratches for those not desiring to be transported, except of their own free will, and good luck with Mittens the cat walking 2 miles to Church. Here is the alternative:
Unable to get your furry, scaled of feathered family to Mass today? Perhaps you are thinking, 'I can barely get one of them in a pet carrier, and I need a transfusion afterwords...'. Or 'that many cats around my dog is going to send him mental...and myself as well!". Not to worry, the Church has a method to assist you, this Feast of Saint Francis!
First and foremost, get some holy water from your Church on October 4th. (My cats are going to love this water part...). Bring a small bottle to Mass with you and fill it with Holy Water from the Baptismal font or wherever they will allow it
This pet blessing is acceptable for the blessing of pets.. be it in your garden or back yard or if there is none of that available, wherever they live.
Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures.
You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land.
You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters.
We ask you to bless this pet.
By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan.
May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen
