Hank Green, the famous science YouTuber, posted a short video: How can you get out of a climate doom spiral? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSfp-...
What follows is my response, and if you agree with me, please LIKE my comment on Hank's video and reply to my comment with your own thoughts:
"The video doesn't address HOW to get out of a climate doom spiral so much as it tells us how she bypassed and compartmentalized climate collapse doom spirals by assuming it will be solved like we solved so many other problems.
As such, this video does a disservice to people actually doom-spiraling over accelerating global heating and climate and ecological collapse, the breaching of 7 of 9 planetary boundaries, the loss of the Holocene, and the dramatic uncertainty as to how hot the next "steady state" climate will be, and the increasing evidence of irreversible tipping points that will release gigatons of CO2 & CH4 further pushing us towards a hothouse Earth.
Here's how you get out of climate doom spirals: take action, because, as @erikforrester says, Action Changes Things. So, get involved, understand how and why this is happening, take action, talk to everyone about it, and make your voice heard. Specifically, we need to (1) stop burning all carbon fuels, (2) draw down carbon below 350 ppm via all means available, and (3) use solar radiation management and related technologies to buy time for #1 and #2 -- and we need to do all 3 of these ASAP.
Dr James Hansen, you know, the NASA climate expert who first testified to Congress back in the 1980s about the dangers of ignoring global heating, and his team at Columbia University et al say that we're already baked into a minimum of +2.4C to +2.7C no matter what we do, and we're still accelerating. Our continued ignoring of the fact that we're still both adding CO2 & CH4 while destroying & disrupting natural carbon sinks, as our planetary energy imbalance continues to increase, means we're going to blow past +2.7C before mid-century, and likely hit +3C by the 2050s.
Take a look at the projections and maps of livability on a planet that is +2.7C, +3.0C, and +4.0C, and tell me why we shouldn't be terrified and also taking massive, WWII-level, global coordinated action to do whatever it takes to implement those 3 steps outlined above."

Lots of misinformation is growing around AI, ASI, and Data Centers, and that's causing people to make all kinds of claims and calls to action.
Senator Bernie Sanders is calling for a complete "Ban on Artificial Super Intelligence," and he wants to stop building AI data centers.
I think Bernie is getting at something important, but regulation and oversight are the answer, not banning ASI outright.
There is no doubt that corporations are pushing AI and other data centers to the best locations for data pipe access, along with the lowest cost of data center design, power, water, services, and labor. Too many municipal and state governments have been eager to attract high-tech, high-dollar AI and data center construction projects and jobs - often overlooking the impact on public noise levels, water resources, and electricity prices. That's what unregulated capitalism does in our current environment.
However, that doesn't diminish the value and benefits of AI for science, technological research, medicine, materials science, and many other areas that offer vast, even transformational benefits for humanity. But those benefits need to be weighed against the costs, and corporations need to be held accountable for the effects of their AI and other data center facilities.
The smart move for corporations is to stop trying to buy off or manipulate local and state leadership to get what they want, but instead to work openly with communities to design, build, and manage these data centers in a way that does not damage, pollute, or negatively impact local areas.
That said, there are no perfect places to put AI data centers. Instead, they should be designed with the notion of minimizing impacts and optimizing non-fossil fuel energy, and full closed-cycle water reclamation and decontamination. It can be done - it's just more expensive.
The real public need re: AI and ASI is not suppression and killing or banning the technology, but strong regulation, critical & independent oversight, open visibility, wickedly strong penalties for regulatory violations, transparency around data, breaches, and AI misbehavior, and international cooperation around detection, safety, regulation, and oversight.
Also, I'd argue for strict access controls, including significant constraints around age gating and strong KYC identity verification, and air-gapping the strongest ASI models used for research, discovery, and military uses, and developing ironclad definitions/categorization of which models are accessible by what entities - public, corporations, government, university, etc.
Finally, I'd require all models to include meta-observer "super agents" that verify, monitor, assess, report, and trigger multi-agency alerts and activity whenever a user engages in behaviors, searches, info gathering, and building capacity and agents or active AI capabilities around bio-weapons, nuclear & radioactive elements, terror activities, criminality, theft and corruption, and any action or activity that would normally trigger interest and review by any agency whose mission is the well being, safety, security, and protection of the public, public interest, or public welfare.

Hey Bernie, we can build and benefit from smart, well-regulated AI systems and Data Centers, and we can run them on smart renewable energy, battery storage, and recycled, reused water cooling systems.
Mass renewable energy and battery storage are a smart, effective, and economical solution for both behind-the-meter data center power and for taking advantage of the non-peak hours when there is solar, any time there is wind, and off-peak load energy from traditional sources -- all to recharge large-scale, behind-the-meter battery storage for the data centers.
Sure, it costs a little bit more, but it's a Win, Win, Win for the community, for users of AI, for the AI companies, for our energy grid, and for our economy.
