What makes a stock halal or haram? There are two main checks, according to AOOIFI standards.

(BTW - We put together a free halal investment guide - click the link below to grab it)

www.islamicfinanceguru.com/resources/investment-ch…

Check 1: what the business does
Banking on interest, gambling, alcohol, tobacco or pork: out
Defence is not haram by default, but most defence companies make money from bloodshed in Muslim lands, and that is where they fall down

Check 2: how it is financed
Interest-bearing debt over 30% of market cap: out
Interest-bearing assets over 30%: out
Haram income over 5% of revenue: out

If your stock fails check 2, but still has some question marks, you will have to purify a portion of your investment.

Sectors that usually pass, with examples
Technology e.g Nvidia, Apple, TSMC
Manufacturing e.g Eaton, Emerson, Rockwell Automation
Healthcare: Abbott, Medtronic, Stryker
Pharmaceuticals: Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, AstraZeneca
Logistics: SITC, DHL Group, Union Pacific
Agriculture: Corteva, CF Industries
Mining: BHP, Rio Tinto, Newmont, Agnico Eagle
Utilities: Constellation Energy, GE Vernova, Quanta Services

Sectors that fail, with examples
Banking and insurance: HSBC, Barclays, Aviva
Gambling: Flutter, Entain
Alcohol and tobacco: Diageo, BAT, Imperial Brands
Pork: Cranswick, WH Group, Hormel

As a side note, defense isn't haram by default but most of the stocks In that sector are involved in causing harm to civilians and fail screens. When it comes to tech stocks, you can also use halal.sh to see which companies may be compliant in Israeli Occupation.

Stocks that pass today, may not pass tomorrow, since the debt level of a company is often in flux. Make sure to keep checking before you buy!

Most of the growth in stock market fund right now is not coming from hundreds of companies. It is coming from a handful of AI Stocks.

Which raises the obvious question: If AI is doing the heavy lifting, are the companies doing it actually halal? And even if they are, are they ethical in their dealings?

Some are.
Some are not.
And chances are, unless you've been mindful, you're probably invested in a few less than virtuous companies.

The unhealthy investor waits until they feel ready, and that moment never comes. When they finally do put money in, they check the app every ten minutes, panic sell the first time it drops, and quietly measure themselves against whoever had the best year.

Indecision is the most expensive trait an investor can have, because you lose money slowly enough that you never notice it happening.

The healthy investor decides what success looks like before they start.

They know what the money needs to do and by when, they invest as though they won't sell for years, and they write down their rules in advance so the decision in a crash is made by the rational version of them.

Their investments serve them, not the other way round. The disciplined investor is the rich investor, not the loudest one.

The SP500 Sharia only tracks the halal stocks in the S&P500.

If you invested £10,000 in 2009, it would be £86,700 now.

The crazy part? There are probably thousands of people that did so.

And tens of thousands who could’ve, but didn’t.

And with the advent of Halal ETF’s like SPUS & HLAL, which track the market, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be investing

Not investing is literally keeping our community poor.

Most people who buy a halal ETF have no idea what's actually inside it.

An ETF is a fund that holds a whole basket of stocks, so one purchase gets you exposure to all of them at once.

Halal ETFs skew heavily towards tech, then diversify out into healthcare, industrials and a handful of other sectors.

That spread is what lowers your risk, which is why ETFs suit most beginners.

And in recent years it's paid off, because tech has run hard.

But diversification cuts both ways. While these ETFs returned between 30 and 100%, Sandisk did over 5000%

When you pick your own stocks, the risk is far higher. So are the rewards. So dedicating a small portion of your portfolio to stock picks is not a bad idea.

Naturally, it's vital to truly understand whether the stock you are buying is halal or haram. That's why we put together a brand new, free guide to sharia screening stocks.

Click the link below for our FREE guide to Qur'anic Money Laws:

www.islamicfinanceguru.com/resources/30-quranic-le…

Start with defence. Yusuf AS told Egypt to store grain through seven good years before seven lean ones (12:47-49), which today means 3 to 6 months of expenses in cash before anything else. Then clear your most expensive debt, because the Prophet ﷺ said a believer’s soul stays attached to his debt until it’s settled (Tirmidhi).

Give every pound a job using the 50/30/20 split, since the Qur’an praises those who spend “neither wastefully nor stingily, but in between” (25:67), and use your ISA and pension allowances properly. There’s no ayah for tax wrappers, but paying more than you legally owe is still a choice.

Then build. Ya’qub AS told his sons not to all enter through one gate (12:67), which is diversification centuries before anyone called it that: property, gold, equities and private markets rather than one concentrated bet. And take your full employer pension match. The Prophet ﷺ said leaving your heirs wealthy is better than leaving them dependent on others (Bukhari), so turning down free money from your employer is turning down a pay rise.

None of it works without barakah. Nuh AS gave his people a wealth strategy before anything else: seek forgiveness and you’ll be given rain, wealth, children, gardens and rivers (71:10-12).

Keep the source clean, because the Prophet ﷺ described a man raising his hands in dua while his food and clothing are haram, and asked how he could be answered (Muslim). Zakat and sadaqah run on the opposite engine to riba: one grows nothing with Allah, the other gets multiplied (30:39).

And marriage sits here too, since Allah promises to enrich those who marry while poor out of His own bounty (24:32).

Which one are you weakest on?
