Figuring Out Money
The easiest way to get SPX’s daily expected move is VIX ÷ 16. But an expected move should contain 68% of daily closes, and the Rule of 16 doesn’t.
I tested 2,500+ trading days. In calm markets it held up to 92% of closes, so the range is too wide. Above VIX 40 it held only 54%, so it’s too narrow.
The flaw: dividing by 16 assumes the VIX prices risk the same way in every market. It doesn’t.
I prefer the options chain, but if you want easy, I made this for you. I calibrated a divisor for every VIX level to bring it back around 68%.
Use both together as a zone: FOM column is the likely range, and the Rule of 16 is the outer edge. Around big events like CPI, FOMC and earnings, use the options chain instead.
