Find Your Biggest Drumming Weakness in 5 Minutes 🥁
5 quick tests. 1 minute each.

TEST #1: CONTROL

Can you change subdivisions without changing tempo?
Set the metronome to 80 BPM.

Play:

20 sec → 8th notes
20 sec → 8th-note triplets
20 sec → 16th notes

Keep the click at 80 BPM the entire time.

If you rush the transition, lose the pulse or need a few beats to settle into each subdivision...

CONTROL might need some work.

TEST #2: COORDINATION

Can your kick move without your hands following it?
Keep:

Hi-hat → 8th notes
Snare → beats 2 + 4

Now move the kick through different positions while your hands stay exactly the same.

Give yourself 60 seconds.

If your hands stop, change or follow your foot...

COORDINATION might be your weak spot.

TEST #3: TECHNIQUE

What happens after 60 seconds of singles?
Pick a comfortable tempo and play:

R L R L continuously for 1 minute.

Pay attention to your:

Grip
Shoulders
Forearms
Rebound

If you start squeezing harder, lifting your shoulders or forcing the strokes as you get tired...

TECHNIQUE might be limiting you.

TEST #4: TIMING
Can you stay with the click for a full minute?
Pick ONE simple groove.

Set a metronome to a comfortable BPM and record yourself playing for 60 seconds.

Listen back.

Are you consistently sitting with the click or slowly drifting ahead/behind it?

If you keep wandering...

TIMING deserves some attention.

TEST #5: PATTERNS

Can you switch between these 4 patterns without stopping?
Set a metronome to 80 BPM and play each for 15 seconds:

Singles: R L R L
Doubles: R R L L
Paradiddle: R L R R L R L L
R L L K

Move straight from one to the next without stopping.

If one pattern immediately slows you down or makes you think about which limb comes next...

PATTERNS might be your weak spot.

SO... WHICH ONE GOT YOU? 👀

Look back at the five tests:

CONTROL → Dynamics + consistency
COORDINATION → Limb independence
TECHNIQUE → Efficient, relaxed movement
TIMING → Staying with the pulse
PATTERNS → Building + applying vocabulary

The one that felt the most uncomfortable is worth paying attention to.

And don’t immediately try to fix all five.

10 DRUM TERMS EVERY BEGINNER DRUMMER MUST KNOW

01 / TEMPO
The speed of the beat, measured in beats per minute (BPM). At 60 BPM, you count one beat every second.

02 / SUBDIVISION
Subdivision means dividing the beat into smaller, equal parts.

If you’re counting quarter notes:

1 2 3 4

you can divide each of those beats into smaller notes as your playing develops.

03 / TIME SIGNATURE
The two numbers that show how the music is counted. In 4/4, the top number means four beats per bar, and the bottom number means each beat is a quarter note.

04 / BAR (MEASURE)
One complete group of beats. In 4/4, counting “1, 2, 3, 4” once takes you through one bar.

05 / ACCENT
An accent is a note you play louder than the notes around it.

Play steady quarter notes on the hi-hat:

1 2 3 4

Now make 2 and 4 louder than 1 and 3.

1 TWO 3 FOUR

06 / GHOST NOTE
A very quiet stroke, usually played on the snare.

If your main snare hits are on 2 and 4, a ghost note is played much softer around those main hits.

Think of it as a note you can hear but that sits quietly underneath the groove.

07 / RUDIMENT
A standard pattern of drum strokes. A single paradiddle follows this hand sequence:

R L R R | L R L L

R = right hand, L = left hand.

08 / FILL
A short drum phrase that changes the main pattern, often to lead into another section of a song. A fill can be as simple as one extra tom hit.

09 / RIMSHOT
Strike the drumhead and rim at the same time with the same stick. On the snare, a rimshot produces a sharp crack.

10 / CROSS-STICK
Keep one end of the stick resting on the snare head while you lift and tap the shaft against the rim. A cross-stick produces a woody click, often used in quieter passages.

Which Drummer Are You? 🥁

🎯 The Perfectionist

You hear the ONE note nobody else noticed.
Everyone: “That take was perfect.”
You: “Again. I rushed beat 3.”

Your practice session ends when it’s right, not when the timer says so.

⚡ The Speed Demon

Every exercise eventually becomes: “Okay... but how fast can I play it?”
“Just 5 more BPM” is basically your life motto.

😎 The Pocket Player

You could happily play the same groove for 5 minutes if it feels GOOD.
You don’t need 400 notes.

Get you a bassist who locks in and you’re set.

🌪️ The Chaos Drummer

You sat down to practice singles.
Somehow you’re now playing a fill you invented 30 seconds ago across every piece of the kit.

There was a practice plan. It’s gone now.

Well... was yours accurate? 😂

Can Your Weak Foot Actually Keep Up?
Pass these 3 tests to find out.

TEST #1
Set your baseline.

Pick a tempo that feels challenging but you can still play clean.

Play continuous 16th notes with your dominant foot for 30 seconds.

Pay attention to 3 things:

1. Consistency
2. Volume
3. Fatigue.

Did all 30 seconds stay clean?

TEST #2
Now switch feet.

Keep the exact same tempo and play continuous 16th notes with your weak foot for 30 seconds.

Don't lower the BPM to help it out.

At what second does the weak foot start losing volume, timing or control?

Now you know exactly where your weak foot needs work.

TEST #3
Put them together.

Same tempo again.

Alternate:
R L R L R L R L

for 30 seconds straight.

Listen closely.

Are both feet producing the same volume and spacing or can you actually hear one foot falling behind?

Read Your Results:

30 / 30 / 30 clean? 🔥
Both feet are keeping up.

Right survives 30, left dies at 20?
Your weak foot needs isolated endurance work.

Both work alone but alternating gets messy?
Your issue is likely control between the two feet, not raw speed.

Write down your results and retest in 30 days.
