What bothers me most isn’t simply that Ovechkin supports the Russian government. It’s that he has spent more than twenty years living and building his career in the United States, benefiting from the opportunities and freedoms this country provides — while voluntarily taking part in campaign propaganda for United Russia, a political party that supports Russia’s war against Ukraine and the Kremlin’s policies.

And he explains it by saying: “I’m Russian. I support my country.”

But supporting your country and supporting a specific ruling party that supports a war are two very different things.
