The last video was about how to write C++ code without bugs. I presented 5 mistakes there; how many of them did you know about, and are you actually avoiding?
Big announcement: I made a secondary channel where I will post longer unedited videos. I will just talk about gamedev and C++ tips, so you can just watch the video and learn from me without the over-editing and stuff! Be among the first to Subscribe if you want to learn more C++!
I will post code reviews and other similar interesting things here!
The more you learn to anticipate potential bugs, the more you can prevent them. Most programmers don't take the extra care to prevent bugs, and that's why their software breaks down.
Let me give you an example: in this game I'm working on, there is this elevator thing, and the player should not be able to trigger the elevator without being inside it. Like, I don't want the elevator to ever leave without the player; that would break the game. Most programmers would just check that the player is inside the elevator and only then allow the elevator to move. That's good, but it's not enough. Bugs can still appear; the player could maybe glitch out of the geometry somehow in a weird interaction with other entities, or who knows. It might seem impossible for the player to somehow get out of the elevator or trigger it while being outside, but it really isn't; that's how most bugs in games appear: a weird interaction that you didn't think of.
Can you guess what I did to prevent that? I literally hardcoded a rule that while the elevator is moving with the player, the player can't get out, no matter what happens. Literally, the player gets instantly teleported back inside the elevator, no matter what happens. Think about this: it's literally impossible for this system to fail, sure like there could be weird bugs that glitch the player out of the elevator, but no matter what happens, the player will be forced back inside. Think about how you can do something similar in your code next time and make a habit of checking for potential errors. Also, in order to learn how to anticipate bugs like this, just make more and more projects 💪
Only a few days remain for the launch sale of my 2D rendering library course! If you know basic OpenGL and want to make games from scratch, or maybe a game engine, this course is for you! www.udemy.com/course/2d-library-opengl/?couponCode…
I teach you how to make a 2D batch renderer with textures, texture atlases, and text rendering! I also teach you good programming practices and how to design a good C++ library! A skill you absolutely need if you plan to make your own game engine. It also has guided challenges for you to do on your own and really evolve!
5 years ago, I made my own 2D rendering library (gl2d). At that time, I had no idea how big a thing that would be!
Literally all projects you see on my YouTube channel used that library! Including my Steam game, my game engine, and my Minecraft-like game!
So I am going to bring this experience to you! I am working on a 2D rendering library in C++ and OpenGL! This can be the base for your own games in C++ or your own game engine!
In this course, I teach you how to make a 2D batch renderer with textures, texture atlases, and text rendering! I also teach you good programming practices and how to design a good C++ library! A skill you absolutely need if you plan to make your own game engine.
The course is aimed at intermediate people who already know basic OpenGL things. I'm super excited for it! It will come out in roughly one week!
