Trump’s New White House Helipad Ready — Takes First FlightOn Monday, September 21, 2026, President Donald Trump officially opened the newly built helipad on the White House South Lawn and immediately used it for the first time.
After a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony, Trump boarded Marine One and took off from the new pad, marking its maiden flight. He was heading to New York for meetings and the United Nations General Assembly.In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote:
“We are just leaving the White House Lawn on the maiden voyage from the newly built, and very beautiful, Heliport!”
He thanked Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet, the construction workers, stone masons, and Clark Construction for completing a project that had been discussed for 25 years.
About the HelipadMade of black-and-white granite with the presidential seal Approximately 100 feet in diameter
Built to handle the more powerful VH-92A Patriot helicopters (the next generation of Marine One), which damage the grass with their exhaust
Cost: roughly $5–6 million, largely funded by Sikorsky (a Lockheed Martin subsidiary)
Construction began in late June 2026 and finished ahead of schedule
The permanent helipad replaces the traditional temporary landing spots on the South Lawn grass.
