Don’t spend £3,000 before you’ve earned your first £300 unless it’s a small kitted out van and you’ve completed a week of window cleaning rounds. Definitely a costly mistake if you don’t like it. Never get shiny object syndrome because 10% of your first startup equipment will bring 90% of your profits.

Always Nerve-Racking Cleaning Glass Like This…

These blue roof panes are not your average glass, and getting the cleaning method wrong can potentially turn a routine job into a very expensive mistake. 💷🪟

Some roof glazing can have specialist self-cleaning or solar-control coatings, so before touching the glass, you need to know exactly what you’re dealing with.

💧 How should you approach them?

✅ Identify the glass first — if possible, find out the manufacturer and type of glass/coating before cleaning.

✅ Check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions — different coatings can have different requirements. Don’t assume because something was safe on one property that it’s safe on another.

✅ Start with the least aggressive method — clean water and a soft, non-abrasive applicator/brush is a much safer starting point than immediately reaching for chemicals or abrasives.

✅ Rinse thoroughly — particularly when using purified water, make sure dirt and loose contamination are flushed away rather than being dragged across the surface.

✅ Be careful with your water-fed pole brush — keep the brush clean and check it hasn’t picked up grit or debris that could potentially mark a sensitive surface.

✅ Inspect before AND after — look for existing scratches, coating defects, staining or damage before you start. If something doesn’t look right, document it before cleaning.

🚫 Things I’d avoid.

❌ Razor blades or scrapers unless the glass manufacturer specifically confirms they’re suitable.

❌ Abrasive pads, scourers or aggressive brushes.

❌ Strong chemicals, solvents or acidic/alkaline cleaners unless approved for that particular glass.

❌ Trying to scrape off stubborn marks without knowing what they are. What looks like contamination could involve the coating itself.

❌ Assuming every blue/tinted pane is the same. Different manufacturers and coatings can require completely different care.

❌ Taking unnecessary risks just to finish the job. If you’re unsure what glass you’re dealing with, stop and find out first.

⚠️ One damaged pane can potentially cost considerably more than the money you were going to make cleaning it.

As professional window cleaners, knowing what NOT to do can be just as important as knowing how to get a perfect finish.

👇 WINDOW CLEANERS — how do YOU clean glass like this?

Pure water and a soft brush? Traditional methods? Do you check the manufacturer first? And have you ever come across a coating that caught you out?

If you are a highly skilled window cleaner or glass fitter, drop your experience in the comments. 👇 It could help another cleaner avoid an expensive mistake and I might learn something new.
