The final few years before retirement can be some of your most powerful saving years.
In 2026, the basic employee contribution limit for many 401(k), 403(b) and governmental 457 plans is $24,500.
Workers ages 60 through 63 may be eligible for a higher catch up contribution of $11,250.
That creates a potential total employee contribution of $35,750 for one year, assuming the plan permits it and the participant qualifies.
For a married couple who both qualify, that could mean as much as $71,500 of employee contributions before considering employer contributions.
Actionable takeaway: If you will be between 60 and 63 this year, check your payroll election and ask whether your plan supports the enhanced catch up.
Are you using your final working years as a retirement savings sprint?
