The negative gets the algorithm.

When a Western foreigner in Vietnam does something stupid, disrespectful, or criminal, it gets shared everywhere. And because those stories get clicks, it can create the impression that this represents Western expats as a whole.

It doesn't.

Look at what happened recently in Mũi Né.

More than 100 people came together to clean up the beaches after large amounts of ocean waste washed ashore. Local residents, police, military personnel, youth volunteers, tourists — and Western foreigners living in Mũi Né — all joined together to clean up the coastline.

That's something worth remembering.

There are plenty of Western expats living in Vietnam who aren't there just to take from the country. They're learning the culture, respecting the people, building businesses, teaching, volunteering, helping their communities and contributing to the society that has welcomed them as guests.

Yes, some Western foreigners behave badly. But they're a small minority.

The internet just has a way of making the worst examples look like the majority because outrage gets clicks.

There is another side to Western expat life in Vietnam — people who respect the country, love the people and genuinely try to make the communities they're living in a little better.

🇰🇭 CAMBODIA’S DARK SIDE: CHINESE SCAM GANGS, TORTURE & ORGAN TRAFFICKING

I really love Cambodia.

I’ve spent a lot of time there, and places like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Battambang can be great places to live as an expat.

But Cambodia also has a very dark side that people need to understand.

One of the clearest examples is what Thai authorities recently uncovered at the massive O’Smach scam compound on the Cambodia–Thailand border.

And one important point needs to be made:

This isn't about ordinary Cambodian people.

These scam compounds have largely been associated with Chinese criminal networks operating across Southeast Asia, using Cambodia as one of their bases. There may also be corrupt or complicit officials and local actors allowing these operations to exist, but that is very different from saying Cambodian people are behind them.

At O’Smach, the compound covers roughly 810,000 square meters and contains more than 150 buildings. At its peak, thousands of people were reportedly working there.

Inside, Thai authorities found fake police stations, scam scripts, tightly packed workrooms, detention cells and evidence of people being forced to carry out online fraud.

Former workers have described having their passports confiscated and being beaten or shocked with electric batons when they failed to meet quotas.

But the most disturbing discovery was a hospital.

Zhong Nan Hospital reportedly contained an operating room, surgical equipment, a pharmacy, X-ray facilities and examination rooms.

Thai authorities also found documents containing references to “organ trafficking.”

Authorities believe workers who failed to meet scam quotas may have been threatened with, or potentially subjected to, organ removal.

There were also reports of workers suffering serious injuries, including people with fingers cut off, along with medical testing facilities, a brothel and records relating to abortions.

Now, to be clear: organ harvesting at O’Smach has not been publicly proven. The evidence is disturbing, but the organ-trafficking allegations still require further investigation.

The Cambodian government does appear to be making a serious effort to crack down on these operations.

But the bigger question is how much of the industry has actually been eliminated — and how deeply these criminal networks are embedded.

The Cambodian government says it has dismantled hundreds of scam sites, but independent experts and human-rights organizations remain skeptical, saying some operations may simply be moving into smaller, less visible locations.

And this is important for expats:

If you're living in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang or another normal expat area, you're unlikely to encounter anything remotely like this in your everyday life.

This isn't what everyday Cambodia looks like.

But it is a reality in parts of the country, and the scale of these criminal networks shouldn't be ignored.

I love Cambodia.

But loving a country doesn't mean pretending its problems don't exist.

You can love the people, the food, the culture and the lifestyle while still acknowledging that some incredibly dark things are happening there.

Hopefully the crackdown actually dismantles these networks rather than simply pushing them somewhere else.

🇺🇸 THE LINDSAY CLANCY TRIAL: THE LONE HOLDOUT

This man is a hero.

Michael Desronvil was the only juror who refused to fold. Lindsay Clancy admitted she killed her three children. Her defense pushed postpartum psychosis and not guilty by reason of insanity. Eleven jurors went along. Desronvil did not.

After the mistrial, he said he had zero doubts. The physical evidence, the witnesses, and the prosecution’s case showed she knew exactly what she was doing and planned it.

That is what a jury is for. You do not surrender your judgment because eleven people disagree. You do not vote with the group to make everyone comfortable. And you do not decide criminal responsibility based on how sympathetic the story feels.

Desronvil was the only Black person on the jury. He is a Black conservative and a MAGA supporter. He has said those facts help explain the intensity of the backlash. Other jurors called him arrogant and accused him of refusing to listen. The message was clear: he was the problem because he would not deliver the verdict they wanted.

He has also described several of the other jurors as activists who leaned toward acquittal from day one. That tracks with the broader pattern of people treating this case as a cause rather than a trial about three dead children.

Now, look at the wider reaction.

Modern feminists will melt down over Sydney Sweeney doing a sexual ad for a company she owns a share in. It is her body, her business, and her right in a free country. None of these women’s concerns. Yet many of the same voices have spent this trial pouring sympathy onto a woman who strangled her three kids while treating the lone juror who refused to excuse it as the villain.

Some on TikTok have gone further, attacking the grieving father and calling people who question the narrative monsters. That says more about them than it does about anyone else.

Compassion for mental health is one thing. Turning a mother who killed her children into a cause while attacking the man who held the line is another.

And here is the part the low-IQ crowd never seems to grasp. Pushing the idea that hormones or postpartum issues can wipe out criminal responsibility does the opposite of helping women. It hands every employer, every board, every serious institution, and an easy excuse: we can not fully trust women in high-stakes roles or with real responsibility because if the hormones shift, they might kill people. That is not progress. That is a self-inflicted wound.

Desronvil deserves respect for standing alone when it would have been easier to fold. I hope the father who lost his children can find some peace after this.

🇰🇭 Major Drug & Weapons Bust in Cambodia

Cambodian authorities have arrested seven Chinese nationals in a major drug and weapons operation off the coast of Preah Sihanouk province.

The operation took place early September 23 near Koh Russey, after authorities spent several days investigating the suspects.

Police say they seized approximately 840kg of suspected drugs, packed in 42 bags, along with:

🔫 10 rifles
🔫 39 handguns
💥 7,937 rounds of ammunition
🔇 8 silencers
🎯 108 magazines

Authorities also seized several vehicles and a speedboat connected to the operation.

The suspects were initially intercepted at sea, with further arrests made after authorities followed up on information from the first arrest. The seven suspects and seized evidence have now been handed over to provincial police while the investigation continues.

If you ever clock one of these rats on the street in Bangkok, let them know they’re being watched.

These are some of the street-level scammers preying on tourists who don’t know the game yet.

Pakistani men. That’s the nationality. A lot of them will tell you they’re from Dubai. They’re not.

They didn’t like being photographed. Some even got aggressive. Rats hate sunlight.

The problem isn’t just the guys in the photos. Corrupt Thai police and Thai lawyers help them operate with impunity. That’s why public exposure is one of the few things that actually lands.

🇦🇱 Why Albania Must Not Repeat Western Europe’s Immigration Mistake

Albania is not a rich Western country. Locals already struggle with low wages and limited opportunities. Flooding the labor market with low-skilled migrants from the Third World makes it worse.

These arrivals come to take, not give. They undercut local wages, compete for the same jobs, and remit their earnings out of a country that is already struggling. Meanwhile, the people who actually built and sustain Albania’s character — the locals — face harder competition and less reason to stay.

If the locals leave, there is no more Albania. That is what makes this place special.

Western Europe already ran this experiment. The results were stagnant wages for native workers, strained services, parallel societies, eroded trust, and insane levels of crime and insecurity.

Albania should not make this mistake.

Whoever is in power and allows this is despicable.

🇦🇱 WAKE UP, ALBANIA.

Big Uncle here.

You just had a 31-year-old Indian national arrested on a rooftop in Kombinat at midnight, allegedly trying to climb through a small window.

Two days earlier, he was already at the same police station after a dispute where a car window was smashed.

He is now in custody because prosecutors say he might leave the country.

One incident. One man. Easy to dismiss.

Don’t.

Albania is signing labor agreements with Vietnam and Indonesia, talking to the Philippines, and already issuing thousands of work permits every year to people from India, Egypt, and elsewhere.

Businesses want cheap labor for hotels, construction, garment shops, farms and other industries because so many young Albanians have already left.

The official story is simple: labor shortage → import workers → keep the economy moving.

The West told itself the same story for twenty years.

Cheap labor.

“Jobs Albanians/Germans/Swedes/French won’t do.”

Temporary.

Controlled.

Net economic benefit.

Anyone who asked about crime, social trust, parallel communities, or what happens when the numbers stop being small was called a racist or an economic illiterate.

Look at the results.

Western Europe did not stay the same countries with a few extra waiters.

It got neighborhoods where police operate differently, rising street crime in cities that used to be quiet, pressure on housing and hospitals, and political parties that exist largely because voters finally noticed their streets had changed faster than politicians admitted.

Low-skill, low-assimilation immigration at scale does not stay “just workers.”

Some integrate.

Many do not.

A fraction commits crime or brings attitudes toward women, property, and authority that clash with the host society.

That fraction is enough to change how a grandmother feels walking home at night.

Albania still has something much of Western Europe sold away:

A relatively cohesive, family-centered, honor-conscious society that survived Hoxha’s isolation and still expects people to behave.

Tourists and expats notice it immediately.

Your grandmother can walk around.

People still know each other.

That is not an accident.

It is the product of who lives here and what they tolerate.

You are now importing the exact labor profile that strained those countries: large numbers from poorer, more distant cultures, recruited because they will accept wages and conditions locals increasingly reject.

Recruitment agencies, debt, overcrowded housing, and weak enforcement follow.

Some workers will be exploited.

Some will exploit the gaps.

A rooftop at midnight in Kombinat is a small preview — not an isolated freak event.

This is not an argument against every foreigner.

High-skill people who speak the language, respect the law, and plan to contribute are not the issue.

The issue is treating labor like a commodity you can import by the tens of thousands because the price is lower this quarter, then acting surprised when the social bill arrives later.

Albania is small.

You cannot absorb the same volume the Germans or Swedes tried to absorb and expect the same outcome.

You also cannot pretend enforcement will magically be better here if the political incentive is simply:

“Keep the hotels staffed and the construction sites moving.”

Once the networks exist, family reunification, overstays, and informal work follow.

That is how it went elsewhere.

You already know what mass emigration did to your villages.

Do not replace departing Albanians with a permanent underclass that has no stake in this country’s future and no memory of what it cost to keep it Albanian.

Demand better wages and conditions so your own people stay or return.

Enforce the law on everyone equally and publicly.

Be selective.

Track who comes, who works, and who leaves.

Do not let businesses offload the social costs onto the rest of the country while they pocket the cheap labor.

The West had decades of warning signs and called them anecdotes.

You still have time to treat the first rooftop as a warning instead of a coincidence.

🚨 AMERICAN PENSIONER & FILIPINA WIFE SHOT DEAD IN PHILIPPINES HOME INVASION

A 72-year-old American pensioner and his 71-year-old Filipina wife were shot dead during an alleged early-morning robbery at their home in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

According to police, armed suspects reportedly scaled a wall at around 4 AM, held the couple’s caretaker at gunpoint and restrained her before entering the main bedroom.

Mark Duell and his wife Elsie were both shot dead.

The perpetrators allegedly stole jewellery, cash, electronics and the couple’s passports before fleeing the property.

The caretaker reportedly managed to free herself around 6 AM and raise the alarm.

Police recovered spent cartridge cases and bullets from the bedroom, while two persons of interest have reportedly been detained for questioning.

Authorities have now established Task Group Duell to investigate the murders and track down the remaining suspects.

🚨 WHAT MAKES THIS EVEN MORE CONCERNING:

This comes less than two months after another 73-year-old American citizen was shot dead in the same province on July 12.

For foreigners considering retirement or long-term living in the Philippines, incidents like this are a reminder that home security, location and understanding your surroundings matter — especially for older expats living in private residences.

The Philippines remains a popular destination for American and Western retirees, but no country is completely free of serious crime.

Stay aware. Secure your home. Know your neighbours. And don't assume that because you're living in a quiet area, you're automatically safe.
