Edumont World School, Malerkotla — featured in Surfaces Reporter, July 2026, under Fascinating Façade.

25,103 sqft set back from the highway, where the administration block becomes the landmark. A north-facing glazed face pulls in daylight; a perforated brick jaali holds it back. White and grey kept quiet so that orange could be loud in exactly two places.

The jaali does what jaalis have always done here — filters light, filters heat, filters sound — only now it sits inside a sculptural, angular frame.

Built by us. Run by them.

We were asked for a play area. We drew a town instead.

A flower shop that opens before the garage. A fuel station with a queue of one. A marquee that glows for no particular reason, which is the best reason. Real kerbs, real crossings, a stop sign that children actually stop at — because the moment you scale something down, you have to be twice as honest about it.

Warm plaster. Solid oak. Canvas heavy enough to sag. Glass that catches the afternoon. The same material discipline we'd bring to any street, just measured to three feet.

That's the part we care about. Not the theme — the craft underneath it. A space works when nobody has to explain it, and children are the most unforgiving audience there is.

Introducing a 2,00,000 sft retail & cinema destination rising across 2.5 acres in the heart of Madhya Pradesh.

This isn’t just a building. It’s a catalyst.
A fluid white mass that breaks from the ordinary — the facade breathes with parametric curved geometry, its roofline sweeping like a continuous wave frozen in concrete. The upper cinema volume is wrapped in a perforated bronze-gold screen panel, glowing from within at dusk like a lantern set against the skyline.
Full-height glazing at street level dissolves the boundary between inside and outside — retail becomes spectacle. The arched underbelly connecting both volumes creates a covered civic threshold — an invitation, not just an entrance.
Chhatarpur has never seen this scale of architectural ambition. This project is designed to redefine the city’s commercial gravity — drawing national and international brands to a market long waiting to be unlocked.

Where the arches begin — 11 acres of open-air retail in Punjab, built around shade, water, and the walk between them.

We began with a single move: an arcade. A rhythm of brick-lined arches in ivory stucco that turns retail frontage into shade, and shade into an invitation to linger. Repeated, the arch stops being an opening and becomes a language — carried across the promenade, folded into the cinema block, echoed in the steel ribbon pavilions that mark the plaza.

At the centre, an elliptical water court cuts into the ground plane. A weathered steel monolith stands within it, hollowed, catching the last of the western light. Around it, patterned stone radiates outward in concentric bands — a paving that draws the crowd inward before the shopfronts ever do.

The cinema arrives as a counterpoint: a dark mass gridded in burnt-orange, glowing at dusk. The tower holds the skyline. The terraces hold the green.

Retail here is the excuse. The public realm is the project.

Some buildings you read. This one stops you.

Two interlocking L-shapes, and a whole mountain range appears — the Tian Shan, held in plan. Jura limestone on one wing, aluminium on the other, and not one lazy joint where they meet.

Inside, Art Street: an eighteen-metre glazed atrium drawn after the Charyn Canyon, running the length of the building. The proportions hold at every height. The light is drawn as carefully as the plan is.

Then the corten — cut into white stone, unrolled across a gallery floor, left to weather. It is the bravest move in the building and it lands completely.

Ten thousand square metres of galleries, studios and plaza, and none of it announces itself. You just keep walking, and keep looking up.

Ar. Chapman Taylor have built something genuinely rare.

All of us. One night off. Zero drawings.

The whole studio out of the office for an evening at @hopup.zirakpur — trampolines, go-karts, arcade, dinner after.

Sixty seconds into the jump arena and the hierarchy disappears. Turns out we're competitive about a lot more than deadlines. Kart number five showed zero regard for the racing line, and everybody came back to the table claiming they'd won.

We spend most of the year drawing spaces for other people to enjoy. Every so often it's worth being on the other side of that.

Ar. Prerna Kaleru gave the only briefing of the evening.
