Kalyani Greenfield Airport — Key Highlights

1. New Greenfield Airport in Kalyani
The West Bengal government has started the process of identifying and securing land for a proposed Kalyani Greenfield Airport in Nadia district. The project is intended to provide additional aviation capacity for the Kolkata region and improve air connectivity across South Bengal.

2. Around 2,000 Acres of Land
Around 2,000 acres of land spread across nine mouzas have been identified. These include Kalyani, Birpara, Char Jadubati, Ganga Mohanpur, Char Madhusuanpur, Sarati, Murutipur, Umapur and Iswaripur.

3. Land Transactions Temporarily Restricted
To facilitate the land-acquisition process, the administration has temporarily stopped registration of property sale and purchase documents in these identified areas. The government already has around 240 acres, while the remaining land would need to be acquired.

4. Planned as a Major Airport Project
The proposed airport was announced in the 2026 West Bengal Budget. Government planning documents indicate that the project is being considered along the lines of major greenfield airports such as Navi Mumbai International Airport and Noida International Airport.

5. DPR and Construction Timeline Yet to Be Finalised
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and construction schedule are expected to be finalised after the land-acquisition and other administrative processes are completed. So, at present, the project is still in its planning and land-acquisition stage, rather than the construction stage.

6. Four More Airports Under UDAN
Alongside Kalyani, the state is also working on regional aviation projects at Chharra in Purulia, Balurghat in South Dinajpur, Hasimara in Alipurduar and Kalaikunda in West Midnapore, with the required land proposed to be handed over to the Airports Authority of India.
