Hey Plot Heads!

The anniversary video is finished and uploading! Since I'm at work today, I'll have it out for you tomorrow (Tuesday) at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET!

This is one of the most personal videos I've made yet, and I hope it reminds you why you fell in love with storytelling in the first place.

After that, we'll be back to our normal schedule this weekend, and I'm excited to share my own framework for writing dialogue with you all!

Hey Plot Heads!

I've been working on a really special video to celebrate Plot Luck's first birthday! It's a bit different from what I've done before, but it's something I've really needed to make for myself lately, and I can't wait to share it with you.

Plot Heads! Quick update: I ran into an issue getting today’s upload over the finish line. Unfortunately, with the day job, I won’t be able to take another run at it until this evening. So I’m going to have This Is What Good Dialogue Actually Sounds Like up first thing tomorrow morning (Thursday) at 9am PT / 12pm ET.

Sorry for the delay, everyone. I really wanted to have this one out for you today! We will get things back to our normal schedule this weekend.

🔥 PLOT HEADS!!! You’re probably wondering where the Good Dialogue video is (coming Thursday at 9am PT / 12pm ET). 😅

I had some health stuff come up over the last few days that unfortunately knocked me out for a bit.

But I’m doing much better now, and Good Dialogue will be here Thursday!

We’re putting Aaron Sorkin, Quentin Tarantino, Richard Linklater, and Nora Ephron side by side to figure out how four writers who sound completely different can all be considered masters of dialogue.

And today also happens to be a pretty special day...

Plot Luck is officially one year old! 🎉 What a journey it has been so far!

So to celebrate, I’ll also have a VERY special video coming this weekend on a much bigger topic that I teased during my last livestream.

Last week, we started by breaking down what BAD dialogue actually sounds like.

This week, we’re asking the much harder question:

What does GOOD dialogue actually sound like?

Because Aaron Sorkin, Quentin Tarantino, Richard Linklater, and Nora Ephron are all celebrated for their dialogue... and they sound NOTHING alike.

🤔 So what are we actually calling “good”? Is there something all great dialogue has in common? Does it depend on what you’re trying to do? And how do you figure out what works for your own writing?

So this Saturday, we’re putting these four dialogue styles side by side and seeing what their differences can teach us about our own dialogue.

And I really wanted to start here because before we can talk about writing great dialogue, we need to get better at recognizing why dialogue goes bad in the first place.

We’re going to dig into some famously bad dialogue clips, figure out what’s really going wrong underneath the words, and then put those ideas to the test with original examples I wrote specifically for the video (both the bad and good version).

I’m VERY excited about this one, and it feels like exactly the right way to start Dialogue That Delivers.

We’ve spent all of When Characters Collide exploring relationships between characters. And we’ll definitely keep coming back to character dynamics and more of the topics YOU all have been asking for.

🌊 But after a little time away and some self-reflection by the beach… I realized there was one relationship we somehow never explored.

👉 A character’s relationship with THEMSELVES.

What happens if we treat that relationship like any other dynamic in a story?

Because maybe one of the most important relationships in your entire story…

I’m spending some time with family this week, including my twin sister, niece, and nephew from the family video, and taking a little time to recharge before we gear up for what’s ahead. ❤️

💬 I can’t wait to share what we have in store as we dig into dialogue on the page and on the screen, experiment with how lines actually play out loud, and explore all the little choices that make a conversation come alive.

💡 AND YOUR VIDEO IDEAS... I have genuinely been in awe of all the suggestions you left on my last post. There are SO many great ones! I’m going to go through them, get everything organized, and keep a running list as we move forward.

And you may start seeing some of them sooner than you think. 👀 Going forward, Plot Luck is going to mix in more videos outside of whatever chapter we happen to be in, giving us more freedom to jump into great ideas when they come up.
