Karnataka Assembly Special Session: Preparations Reviewed

Ahead of the three-day special session beginning tomorrow, Assembly Speaker Saleem Ahmed inspected the preparatory arrangements at Vidhana Soudha today.

He reviewed the facilities and arrangements being made to ensure the smooth and effective conduct of the session and issued necessary instructions to officials.

First Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru; projects worth Rs 32,611 crore approved
In a major decision, the Karnataka Cabinet has approved declaring Tulu as the state’s second additional official administrative language, limited to Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

The special Cabinet meeting held in Mangaluru approved projects worth Rs 32,611 crore, including Rs 16,000 crore for rural development.

Other key decisions include:

• Coastal and Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy 2026
• 150-acre fisheries park
• Fisheries and Blue Economy University
• Fisheries college seats increased from 60 to 200
• Rs 549 crore medical college in Puttur
• Public opinion on renaming Dakshina Kannada as Mangaluru
• Cabinet meetings at 10-12 locations over the next 15 months

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar travelled from the Circuit House in Mangaluru to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in an Ambari bus, an open vehicle, to attend a special Cabinet meeting.

N. Chandrasekaran has been reappointed as the Chairman of Tata Sons for another five-year term.

The decision was approved by the Tata Sons board at a meeting in Mumbai. Chandrasekaran has been leading Tata Sons since 2017.

According to sources, Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts and a Tata Sons board member, was the only director to oppose the reappointment.

Tata Sons is also facing continued expectations around a possible stock market listing. If listed, it could become one of India’s biggest IPOs. A 1% stake sale could be worth around ₹15,000–₹20,000 crore, while the overall valuation could reach around ₹20 lakh crore, or about $230 billion.

Tata Sons controls major businesses in sectors including steel, automobiles, IT, hospitality and aviation.

UPI Charges Proposal Sparks Concern

Congress leaders and workers in Bengaluru have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to withdraw the reported proposal to impose a 0.4% MDR charge on UPI transactions above ₹2,000 from October 15.

The protesters said the move could increase the financial burden on common people, small traders and the middle class. They also raised concerns over rising prices and unemployment.
