Dr Tallha Abdulrazaq spoke this morning to Times Radio about the funeral procession of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In the wide-ranging interview, he explained the political reasons behind why the Iranians took more the four months to bury him rather than the Islamic customary 24-hours, and he also tackled the subject of the absence of his son and new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

Finally, Dr Abdulrazaq addressed how the US's fickle nature as an ally made Iranians hesitate to face off against the regime, with references to President George H. W. Bush abandoning the Shia in Iraq in 1991 and both President Biden and Trump abandoning the Afghans who collaborated with the US in Afghanistan.

In its war on Iran, the United States has declared a “capital V military victory” due to the US’s self-assessment of having “already met and exceeded” all their military objectives, while the leadership in Tehran is calling it a triumph for Iran’s “powerful armed forces”.

While we can’t yet say who is any closer to a true “victory”, we can certainly take a look at the ledger to see who is merely bragging and who is perhaps edging their opponents with their decision-making. Dr Tallha Abdulrazaq breaks it down.

Speaking to Iain Dale on LBC Radio yesterday, I argued that Iran's sole gambit for victory against the US and Israel is to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed for business, but otherwise they have no way to conventionally defeat their adversaries.I also argued that it is the ghosts of Iraq and Saddam Hussein that are protecting Iran, as the memory of the 2003 invasion has effectively restrained the US military's capabilities as the Trump administration does not want to launch a full-scale invasion.
