Eight years ago - this day - I took the biggest risk of my life. After spending more than a decade in mainstream media - left the surety of a salaried job and a corner office to start The Deshbhakt. No business plan / no office / no backing - just a burning passion to do the right thing. Had to sell my small house (the only asset I had) to get some seed funding.

Now eight years later - after building The Deshbhakt to a 10 Million strong family across 4 platforms - daring to take another leap. This time too the passion and conviction is the same. The need to call out the bluff and lies of western media as the world and rules based order falls apart. The Gaza Genocide, War on Iran and (mis)reporting on Israel’s actions has blown into bits the remaining reputation of 'Western Democracies' & 'Western Media'

Time has come to decolonize the media, to make voices heard from the other side of the Globe. For centuries the Global North has held sway over global affairs and the media microphone. They have decided what is news and what is noise, what should be remembered as history and what should be forgotten. They call on who is a hero and who’s a dictator.

We are here to challenge the old ways - to make the global south heard loud and clear.

Dear Deshbhakt Family,
One the richest, most powerful & well connected businessman in the world is fighting independent you-tubers now. A man who owns one of India's biggest media conglomerates is discovering that news content creators with one camera - broadcasting from one room - have one thing that money can't buy.

During India's First Emergency (besides the notable exception of ‪@indianexpress‬) - it were the smaller independent publications that stood their ground & gave Indira Gandhi a tough time. Publications like #Himmat & #Pratap didn't bend despite hundreds of journalists being sent to jail & courts being a mute spectator.

Today, 50yrs down the line - as history repeats itself, we at ‪@thedeshbhakt‬ are proud to keep that tradition alive along with a select group of individuals. The tradition of questioning people in power & not bending to money & muscle.

On the 16th of September - a Delhi Court passed an ex-parte injunction order against nine journalists & organisations (including ‪@paranjoyonline‬ & Ravi Nair) who had been regularly reporting on Adani.
While such orders have become mundane in 'New India' - what set this apart was a 'John Doe' order on the 10th defendant. This basically allowed Adani to make a list of people that IT THOUGHT was making 'defamatory content' against it - these people were not even NAMED in the defamation suit.

Now independent youtubers & publications such as ‪@ravishkumar.official‬ ‪@AjitAnjumOfficial‬ ‪@newslaundry‬ ‪@dhruvrathee‬ ‪@Abhisar_Sharma‬ and yours truly - have been given 36 hours to delete over 200 pieces of content - without any opportunity to contest this order.

Whatever anyone's political leanings may be - this is now beyond politics and this silencing will impact everyone. We don't fully know what fear is driving this gagging - but our team takes this move as a compliment and this is testament to the power & credibility that small independent Digital Publications have been able to garner. We thank each and every member of the Deshbhakt family for their trust and support. (As you may have noticed we have virtually doubled our output in the past 3 months)


We do not know when OR IF the higher courts will reverse this alarming order - but we will carry on our mission to punch up, question everything & fight for our Democracy. As for the legal angle - there is a laundry list of businessmen who tried to silence journalists using the courts - usually it didn't end very well for them.

On your end - I would just request you subscribe / support / share good content (you be the judge) but unless good content is watched and shared more - authoritarian forces will have an upper hand.

The Deshbhakt

I don't believe in angels & fairies - but I encountered them myself in Norway. Still shaking my head in disbelief (and relief) that angels do exist. At the fag end our 10 day #Norway drive through - my wife Nidhi & I were hiking to Preikestolen (the world famous #PulpitRock) close to the city of #Stavanger. It's a must do if you are in Norway - though it's not the easiest of hikes, especially if it has rained so much, making the terrain slippery.

We took the chance, reached Pulpit Rock and enjoyed some amazing fjord views - on our way back however Nidhi's leg slipped and she seriously sprained / fractured her ankle. About 4 kilometres from civilisation, biting cold winds, rain fast approaching and unable to move - I was at my wits end on what to do next. However fellow hikers asked me to call 113 - assuring me that help will reach us.

Really?

With no other option - I called the emergency number with a lot of skepticism, but what happened next...showed me Norway's finest. Within minutes the responders had used my phone to pin my location and assured me help was on the way. (At this point I am thing that someone will come with painkillers and some bandage)

In less than an hour - an ARMY of mountain rescuers - accompanied by doctors were with us. They examined Nidhi - put her leg in a vacuum bag - opened up a portable stretcher - and 6 super-humans carted Nidhi all the way to the base camp through steep terrain. All with a smile.

Wait it gets better.

While Nidhi & I were worried if we could even afford this rescue??? - we came to know that these angels were from the Norwegian People’s Aid - an NGO that offers Rescue Service and First Aid to those in need - for free. They are not even Govt.

Wait it gets EVEN better.

These rescuers were not part of any paid / on-duty / professional team that was at the park / trail. No - they were normal working Norwegians who just land up to help when the need arises. Something like batman - but normal people.

One of the rescuers was a surveyor / another who has been doing this for 15 years - works in the petroleum industry! For a nation that spends so much time in rain / darkness - I came to understand why Norway is one of the happiest nations on the planet.

I am at a loss of words - that people's lives matter so much here. 
I am still shaking - thinking of what would have happened if these angels didn't come for us.
I am deeply thankful & in awe of Norwegians & the Norwegian People’s Aid. 

We head back home today with a heart full of memories and Nidhi's sprits are high as ever.
Even while sitting on a wheelchair - waiting for the aircraft - she's happy that we completed the trek till Pulpit Rock before disaster struck and we got some great pics! :))))

This was supposed to start in May - but due to the Pahalgam Terrorist Attack & its aftermath - we got delayed. But better late than never!

The Deshbhakt

They say that in war, truth is the first casualty. Turns out that the Govt. of Pakistan wasn't too happy with the truth bombs we are dropping post Pahalgam Terrorist Attack & Operation Sindoor... but banning ‪@thedeshbhakt‬ is not going to solve Pakistan's financial, social or terror problems. Bans seldom solve anything.

On one hand Pak Govt says that they 'won the war' - on the other hand they are banning stuff left - right & centre. Why the panic & hypocrisy? One wonders.

Regardless of the ban - we will continue to speak against extremism, terrorism & authoritarianism in any nation - as we always have. We will also try and reaching out to those sensible Pakistanis - who see the game that General Asim Munir is playing, because the ONLY way to bring stability to Pakistan is going to be through her people - who need to be told the truth - something that the Pakistani Army is desperately trying to stop. There has been a clear trend of supporting terror and that need to end - of Pakistan's sake (if not India's)

In the meantime - for folks like Ahmad - (who sent a wonderful and warm note) - here's to finding the facts, of understanding various perspectives and working towards a better nation (and neighbourhood)
