Earlier this year, Hank Green's "I Fucking Love Science" song was eclipsed in view count by an anti-scientism parody making fun of him and his ilk.
I think that Hank's science outreach has been a net good for humanity, but he fucked up MASSIVELY last month by releasing a video urging his fans to go out and vote in an election (on the ballot: the future of energy) on the other side of the continent--an election Hank clearly didn't even understand.
This is a massive blow for those of us who know that there's only one way to have energy that's sustainable, cheap, and safe--yes, safe--nuclear power.
If any of that comes as a shock to you, I encourage you to research the truth about modern nuclear power generation. The candidates Hank endorsed sure haven't. Weirdly enough, Hank didn't actually discuss these candidates, their issue positions...I don't even think he knew their names. Basically, the vibe was, "Go vote out the incumbents because they're Republicans and that's bad!"
While many Republicans have a bad track record when it comes to energy (specifically, giving alternative energy its dues) the incumbents in this particular election just...didn't. They had a good track record on solar power, tons of experience, and, most importantly, didn't suffer from the nuclearphobia that's crippling efforts to simultaneously lower energy costs and save the planet.
Yesterday, over 900,000 people voted them out (in a vote that usually only a couple thousand nerds participate in) in favor of candidates far weaker on nuclear power because an internet celebrity told them to.
The problem is that the stereotype of Republicans failing to understand or refusing to embrace alternative energy didn't apply to this race. At all. This disaster could have also been caused by these voters believing, as Hank Green does, that flipping these seats will lower power bills. I'm not holding my breath.
Now the future of energy in Georgia (the state in which I, a YouTuber who did research the candidates, happen to currently reside) looks a whole lot dimmer. Hank will be fine, though. He lives 1,600 miles away.
I want to reiterate that the good Hank Green has been able to accomplish with his science outreach outweighs this gaff by quite a lot. This isn't enough to make me hate him, but HOLY SHIT did he deserve this L or what:
Which of you biotraitors will be the first to upload “Steamboat Willie but it’s been colorized by AI”? And don’t tag ‪@CondorCreationsOfficial‬, he’s currently colorizing the whole thing by hand, like a good soldier.
Serious post: Please take a second and send some good vibes the way of Steve Harwell and his loved ones. I don’t want to jinx it, but total liver failure isn’t exactly something you come back from.
A lot of people have been treating Steve like a laughingstock these past few years, but I don’t view him that way. When I look at him, I don’t see a delinquent. I see a tortured man who just wants to hold his son again, and who’s been accelerating the reunion in ways that are…unhealthy, but which I have no right to judge him for. But who knows, I could be completely wrong about that.
In any case, he lost any shot he had at being a good role model long ago, but he made our childhoods awesome, and we owe him a prayer for that.
