So I made a video about the sentence 会社員ですか？ from みんなの日本語.



I talked about how we typically don’t ask this question right away when we meet a new person.



I explained the specific reasons why we wouldn’t say this and gave alternative sentences you can use in real-life conversations.



And guess what: Minna no Nihongo took down my video for showing a screenshot of the sentence (not even an entire page) for 5 seconds.

So I removed the screenshot and uploaded it again.

Many people get this wrong, but honorific (commonly as "polite") Japanese (keigo) is not the same as formal Japanese. Keigo can be formal or informal, polite or rude.

When we use keigo (honorific language) in daily life, we usually don’t speak very formally but we still use keigo.
