With an ache in my heart I can't fully describe, I'm writing this to tell you Rocky, our beloved South African Cape Parrot, passed away this morning. He was only 3 1/2 years old, and had been fighting Avian Bornavirus (ABV) for the past eight months.
For those of you who've been here a while, you knew him - his personality was impossible to miss. He had better security instincts than our actual cameras, calling out the moment someone approached the house with his alarm whistle before anything else caught it. And every morning, without fail, he'd greet us with a cheerful “good morning" as Moss or I came downstairs to make coffee. That sound is one l don't think this house will feel the same without.
He brought so much joy not just to our family, but clearly to a lot of you too - I've heard from so many of you over the years about how much you loved seeing him in our videos, and that meant more to us than you probably know. He so wanted to wear a 'Service Bird' vest & sit on my shoulder while playing slots.
We also want to use this to raise some awareness. Avian Bornavirus is a serious illness that's still not widely understood, even among bird owners. It affects the nervous system and digestive tract, and it can be very hard to catch early - birds are instinctively good at hiding when they re unwell. Right now, there is no cure for ABV.
Veterinarians can only help manage the pain and other symptoms with medication, which makes early detection and supportive care so important. If your bird ever shows unusual quietness, changes in appetite or weight, or issues with balance or gripping, please don't wait to get them to an avian vet.
Mama Old School and I are heading to Mohegan Sin tomorrow to film the 9th episode of her birthday ticket series, along with a special FreePlay video. We plan to celebrate the day regardless of the outcome, honoring the video occasion with a special celebration snack that that included Rocky before he fell ill.
