The University Grants Commission (UGC), through its Specification of Degrees notification dated 27 August 2026, has officially specified:
> B.Optom. — Bachelor of Optometry Level: Bachelor’s Minimum Duration: 5 Years Entry Qualification: 10+2
The notification places Bachelor of Optometry among the degrees under the regulatory purview of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP).
👁️ Why this matters
This is an important step toward standardization and recognition of the nomenclature of the Optometry degree at the national level.
For Optometry students, educators and professionals, the clear specification of “Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom.)” is a significant development for the identity and academic recognition of our profession.
