News Release: Issued by the City of Clermont Police Department Statement from Chief John Graczyk Clermont, FL (September 1, 2026) In light of recent directives and statements the Clermont Police Department is announcing the immediate suspension of its Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) Program. We have carefully considered the value LPR technology provides to our officers and investigators, the concerns expressed by members of our community, and the changing legal and policy landscape surrounding the use of ALPR in Florida. The ALPR technology deployed within the City of Clermont has provided our officers and investigators with a valuable investigative tool. When operated in accordance with applicable guidelines and safeguards, LPRs have assisted in the investigation of robberies, kidnappings, and other serious felony offenses. The technology has also played an important role in locating missing persons and recovering stolen property. These examples demonstrate the legitimate public-safety benefits of ALPR technology. At the same time, we recognize that effective law enforcement depends upon public trust and strong partnerships with the community. We take seriously the concerns that have been raised regarding privacy, access to ALPR information, data retention, information sharing, and the safeguards required to prevent unauthorized access or misuse. The Clermont Police Department recognizes its responsibility to operate within a clear, consistent, and legally established framework. Until there is greater clarity and definitive guidance from the Florida Legislature regarding the appropriate use, regulation, retention, access, and sharing of ALPR data, the Department will discontinue the use of this technology effective immediately. We understand that suspending this program may impact our ability to prevent and investigate crime and to locate individuals who pose a threat to our community. Nevertheless, maintaining public confidence and ensuring that our officers operate within a clear and lawful framework are fundamental responsibilities of this Department. The Clermont Police Department remains committed to protecting the residents and visitors of our community and to using every lawful and appropriate tool available to keep Clermont safe. ###
