In a baffling twist of events, Retroid has announced the Retroid Pocket Duo Lite Plus (what a mouthful). This is the same shell/screens as their RP Duo Lite but with the more performant Qualcomm Q-7790 (SD7 Gen4) chipset found in the RP Duo. The announcement is meant to tailor to users who want the slimmer form factor of the Duo Lite but with the power of the Duo.

Customers who already bought the Duo Lite received an email today giving them three options: 1) keep their Lite order as-is, 2) convert their Lite to a Lite Plus and pay the $50 difference, or 3) if their order has already shipped, they can send the Lite back (with shipping covered by Retroid) for a full refund so they can buy the Lite Plus.

So here is the new pricing landscape for dual screen Retroid products:
RP Duo Lite 4GB/64GB model: $149 ($135 pre-order)
RP Duo Lite 6GB/128GB model: $169 ($155 pre-order)
RP Duo Lite Plus 8GB/128GB model: $219 ($199 pre-order)
RP Duo 8GB/128GB model: $269 ($249 pre-order)

The Duo Lite should have plenty of power for NDS gaming and a bit of 3DS too, whereas the Duo (and now the Duo Lite Plus) should be able to play 3DS easily. The main difference between the Duo and the Lite models is that the Duo has OLED panels and stacked shoulder buttons.

Overall, it's good to have options and I like that they listened to their customers, but this also makes their lineup very convoluted and the timing is frustrating for buyers. I'll do my best to review all three SKUs as I get them.

I bought a bunch of mesh stylus tips on Amazon and tested them out on the Anbernic RG DS Plus built-in stylus, and I found that 5mm tips work the best. They are a little wider than the stylus itself, so you have to tuck the extra material in as you screw the tip into place, but after that it is nicely snug.

To install, just unscrew the rubber tip, and then pull the rubber tip off its housing and replace it with the mesh tip. You can then screw it back into place. It's a non-destructive process so you can always go back to the rubber tip if you'd like. I find it to glide a LOT better and still have the same level of responsiveness. Perfect for games like Phantom Hourglass or Trauma Center.

I have more coming today (3.5mm) but I think 5mm is the right call here. If you are concerned about the mesh tip damaging the screen during an intense Rhythm Heaven session, I'd recommend using the screen protector that comes with the RG DS Plus.

Overall, I think this is an excellent dedicated NDS handheld for under $100, and it's an improvement over last year's Anbernic RG DS and even the original DS in some ways. The stock OS is functional but upcoming custom firmware options will likely improve the experience even more. I don't think it's a necessary upgrade if you already own the previous RG DS, and there are cheaper and better options for all-around gaming (like the Miniloong Pocket 1, which effectively has the same CPU).

Anbernic has announced their next handheld, the RG DS Plus. The "Plus" refers to the screen, which is now a larger 4.3" 1024x768 display. That's a 4x resolution scale of the original DS, but they are using the same low-powered CPU as the original Anbernic RG DS, meaning that it will mostly cap out at 2x upscale for NDS titles. Still, an integer scale of 1x or 2x NDS should look lovely.

Other upgrades include improved speakers and buttons (we'll see about that), a new hinge, and more rounded edges for increased comfort. It also has an integrated stylus holder - I'm not a huge fan of the one that ships with the device, but it would be cool to see third party options. They are also launching their own NDS emulator for the handheld, but hopefully we will have other software options like ROCKNIX and GammaOS Nano soon after launch.

It's got a fair amount of downgrades to contrast its upgrades. It has only a single analog stick, and the RAM is reduced to 1GB with no internal storage -- this means it'll likely be a Linux-only handheld. These cost-cutting measures appear to be so that they can keep the price low, and I've been told it will launch under $100.
