Which road-charging method do you think will win?

NextGen Traffic Intelligence

Faster GPS sampling won't fix road-charging errors. Here's why 🛰️🛣️

Road charging is shifting from roadside gantries to GNSS and hybrid systems, and the hard problems aren't where most people look:

📍 Faster sampling cures random noise, not systematic bias. At 100 km/h and 10 Hz you get a fix every ~2.8 m, but multipath errors persist.
🧱 Zone edges need hysteresis plus a second check. Treat positioning confidence as a billing field and cross-check it with cameras to prevent misbilling.
🔒 Privacy by design: calculate the charge on the device and send charge records, not full trajectories.

How the options stack up:
- Odometer: cheap and private, but no zones
- In-car GNSS: flexible, with privacy concerns
- Roadside gantries: no device needed, but limited roads
- Hybrid: likely the bridge, with coverage gaps to solve

And the safety case for going all-electronic: studies of toll plazas converted to all-electronic collection report roughly 23–29% fewer crashes (total, and fatal-and-injury). Source in the pinned comment.
