Understanding How It Works
The A2 system is a specific type of Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) system. In A2, each key cut position can have one of 10 possible depths, numbered 0 through 9. The core itself contains a "control shear line" and an "operating shear line." The secret to the A2 system is that the sum of any two adjacent shear line depths at a single key position always equals 13.
To discover the control key, you must first take apart the cylinder and measure the top pins. For every space on the key, you have a "Top Pin" and a "Bottom Pin." The total length of the Top Pin + Bottom Pin stack corresponds to one of the 10 possible cut depths. The "Top Pin Number" shown in the chart is a measurement of the top pin's height. By subtracting this Top Pin Number from 13, you determine the corresponding Bottom Pin Number, which is the actual cut that should be on the key.
