What was it actually like to sleep in a medieval village? To survive a winter before heating? To eat before refrigerators existed?
Inside History is about the part of the past the history books skipped — not the kings and the battles, but the ordinary lives underneath them.
The beds, the meals, the work, the cold, the small routines of being alive in another century.
It turns out the everyday was never boring. We just forgot to look.

Hey guys, we just launched a new channel called @InsidePrehistory.
While Inside History covers human civilization and recorded history, this new project goes much further back—exploring Earth millions of years before humans were around.
If you enjoy longform, immersive history content, give it a watch and let us know what era we should explore next.

A medieval peasant probably had more vacation days than you do.
We imagine them doing backbreaking labor every single day of the year. But the medieval calendar was completely packed with mandatory holy days.
When you add up all the feasts, festivals and Sundays, a typical peasant actually got up to 150 days off a year. The church strictly forbade them from working on those days.
Modern life actually gave us longer working hours.

Everyone repeats the same myth that medieval people only drank beer because the water was too dirty to drink.
That is completely false.
Every medieval village and castle was built specifically next to a fresh water source. People drank water every single day.
They drank ale and beer because they were working intense physical jobs and needed the massive amount of liquid calories. It was basically their version of a modern energy drink.
Besides, where do you think they got the water to brew the beer in the first place?

What would you do if you had to survive 16 hours of pitch black darkness every single day?
In a medieval home around the year 1400, winter meant locking the doors and relying only on the food you had already stored. The fire couldn't go out and the cold was constant. But there is a lot more to the story than just freezing in the dark.
Our newest video covers exactly how people made it through the hardest months of the year.
