This is gonna be all over the place, so sorry in advance.
This is my way of placing down my general thoughts. The intention isn't to critique but to present primarily.
I tend to adapt pretty quickly to games like this. Survival horror is in my bloooood.
Silent Hill f is insane man. Just beat it, played it on "Hard" mode for my first time, and that was pretty intense. The game doesn't have a middle ground difficulty. It's either "Story" or "Hard."
The game was pretty scary, but I don't think anything for me personally will be scarier than the time I originally played 1&2 back when I was about 9 years old all the way through with my Prima & Brady games guide of each game respectively.
Silent Hill f's approach to horror definitely presents some of the original games' flair to how horror was presented, mainly with intense atmosphere and music accompanying the environment or the creatures that lurk through the corridors and alleyways.
Times where sounds are used to catch you off gaurd and scare you even with no looming threat, yet, other times where monsters jump out of corners or bum rush you leaving you as the player to either fight or run.
These elements are still present here in the game, which to me is such a vital core of the vibe in general for a Silent Hill game.
That of which IS in every Silent Hill game, but to varying qualities between games.
That being said, the intensity of the world and the design of the combat encounters very much do present a "fight or flight" feeling, but I'd argue participating in combat definitely becomes more abundant in the overall design and progression of the game as a whole.
What sets it apart from the originals is definitely the intense nature of the esthetics of the world and the approach to the design as a whole in terms of mechanics and overall design ideals.
Although I will say the audio mixing in some areas of the game, including cutscenes, is mixed pretty bad, I'd personally say.
The game is PRETTY combat heavy.
The elements of Silent Hill 2R do leak into this game in a lot of ways, but I'd say as a whole, Silent Hill f feels very much its own thing, this becomes clear once you are presented your first combat encounter.
Added onto the fact there is a "Counter-Attack" mechanic that feels great to pull off, and is relatively easy to understand and do, but is extremely needed for you to participate in order to have combat go smoothly.
I would argue that a good number of encounters where I attempted to run became ultimately futile, and I was forced to fight. There are also combat encounters where you must fight in order to proceed, most of which were pretty straightforward to deal with, but later in the game near end, there were moments where I absolutely HAD to fight in order to proceed.
These moments were a definite highlight of an issue I believe to be the choice in enemy placement. I feel as if once players get to the portion i'm trying to allude to, without spoilers, will understand the issue at hand with the choice enemies placed in these locations. I struggled a decent amount with these, but ultimately, I was able to succeed after some patience and testing of enemy attack patterns and behaviors.
- ADDENDUM -
- Not gonna suger coat it, the combat does indeed breed a sense of familiarity with a "Souls-Like" style with it mixing elements of Silent Hill 2R in the pot.
Mixing as well are some of the item effects that are akin to those of a Souls-Like.
They as well, with them having unique behaviors of multiple different healing items, can also be sold at a shrine for "Faith", which is used to upgrade Hinako's stats, or roll for what are simply "accessories" or as they are called in-game as "Omamori", these of which gives an effect like "Increasing Max Health" etc.
The Shrine I would akin more towards the like of the Save Shrines in the Onimusha games, those allowed you to save, upgrade, enhance, and the like. The Shrines or "Hokora" as they are called in-game do not behave like the Bonfires of a Souls game.
It is to this degree with a game such as Silent Hill, I believe a good term to call it would be a "Survival-Souls" game.
Dumb but I think it's fitting. The elements of design with Survival Horrer games and the elements of a Souls-like game both blend together like Peanut Butter and Jelly. It's almost as if the Souls style of game was meant to mix with Survival Horror. I weirdly really like it, but I think it needs some tweaking on a personal level, but I see the vision, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. -
The game definitely has jank, and a fair amount of it sometimes. Mostly, that "jank" comes from the combat in general.
I'd say it's a double-sided coin for me personally, I can't say for someone else, however.
For me, the jank did cause some irritation, but after changing strategies in these scenarios, I had a much smoother approach that would happen after some instance of what could be considered "BS" during an encounter.
The environment, however, isn't safe from the jank either. The world is designed very "corridor" esk in general, tight hallways, walkways, paths, it isn't as open as say the outskirts of the regular location of Silent Hill. The world sometimes will present areas that "seem" walkable but aren't.
Overall, Silent Hill f was an awesome experience that genuinely had me on the edge of my seat. I'm not entirely good to judge the qualities of a story but from what I've seen, it has all the things that a confusing Silent Hill plot flooded with juicy symbolism that warrants waiting for a "Max Derrat" or "Sphere Hunter" video to drop to understand it completely.
I liked it, and I enjoyed it pretty well. I'm going to be playing more.
But i'm happy now because over the past few days, I've finally been able to finish the game without being "spoiled" by YouTube.
Hooray! 👹

Immediately, Reddit took down most of my posts I've been putting out there to get the new video some traction 😎
No, but it's worth a shot.
