My great grandmother Lola left her heritage behind in Louisiana when she moved to NY in the 1930s. I decided to uncover our family story and begin finding our roots. I'm still on the journey of hidden heritage, genealogy and finding out how our family history fits in the context of community history!

If your Choctaw ancestor isn't in the Dawes index, they may still be in the records. The index only lists people who were approved. Rejected and doubtful applicants are on separate "R" and "D" cards at the National Archives in Fort Worth, and their files often hold family testimony going back generations (mine did!).

That line comes from a real runaway slave ad. The woman it describes was enslaved, and the man who claimed to own her admitted you couldn't tell by looking.
